Tee i did back in March for Architects, not sure if the type is on the front or not, its just their logo from the new album. Either way, found this one quite nice and relaxing to do..its simple, but it was really nice to not have to do the most brutal design on earth for once.

I'm not a big fan of the "everything rendered as if made from tree bark" style - except when you do it. Rather than being an affect, it comes across as the genuine way in which you express an idea. The style doesn't obfuscate the subject most of the time.

Your line thicknesses have a nice heirarchy to them. The importance of the interior lines is diminished in an appropriate way by the spotted blacks and thicker, outside lines allowing for readability despite the inherent complexity of the style.

The way you used complementary colors for shadows and highlights, but none too dark so as to overpower the linework, helps a lot.

Thanks Ray. This is exactly the sort of comment i would much rather read when i am trawling through the new designs..!

Its funny you should mention the 'tree bark' thing..i have often thought that myself when i have finished a piece. ( i am also often not a fan of how it has turned out..but hey, that's artists for you i guess) With this one especially though i was trying to create the feel of a carved statue to some extent, hence the limited pallete. Yeah, i sometimes definitely overdo it, especially with that Hades one, but then i guess thats half the fun! But as i think many of us know, once you get stuck into a style you can be asked to repeat it again and again, but im slowly doing my personal work such as this that is a lot more free and open..i have some nice ideas in the works that are like this :) i also have some that are the complete polar opposite and take stuff like the Hades piece to the next level!! But i have found recently with the more complex pieces its even more important to be careful with your line width to make certain areas pop out from the rest..that and lighting.

Anyways..yeah bonus colours could definitely had given it even more clarity i agree, but i do like the way the antlers become the branches, and the eagle is also one with them! In this case it was mainly down to the printing colour limit though..as is usually the case, which is also good for me, as i generally get way more colours to play with!

<img src="http://styl.us/forum/extensions/Vanillacons/smilies/teemu/beer.gif"/></blockquote>

It was quite therapeutic for some reason..</blockquote>

No problemo. Happy to provide input.

I think, clarity wise, this is a slightly more readable image than, say, your Hades piece. But, that's partly due to a) the slightly smaller scope in terms of subject matter and b) the # of colors used.

You said you consciously limited the palette of the piece to try and achieve that simplicity and I think adding a second, complementary palette to the non-central elements of your pieces would REALLY increase readability and focal point (while not forcing you to limit yourself).

Quickie hue shift:

<img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3540/3775455804_527b31e57a_o.jpg"/>

They're obviously fine as-is, and a lot of this comes down to personal stylistic choice. So don't worry; I'm not trying to be the jack booted art gustapo. :p Besides, I know that we work in a medium where our spot colors are severely limited. Often, the luxury of a secondary color palette isn't afforded.</blockquote>

In this case it was mainly down to the printing colour limit though..as is usually the case, which is also good for me, as i generally get way more colours to play with!</blockquote>

I've learned so much reading all this. Haha.

I'm getting yelled at right now because we are suppose to be leaving in an hour to board a fairy to go to macao but I have to comment on this. I too like the fact that you changed it up a bit and didn't do the usual rectangular composition and left some more negative space. The line work is ace and allows the viewers eyes to flow nicely around the piece. To me this is one of my favorites because it's a simpler idea but executed as if intended to be another masterpiece (which it is). Looking forward to the other similar ones to this and again excellent work.
