I suppose for one I wasnt brought up in a muslim culture- my work directly reflects the culture and times I was molded in. If I was from China, I do not doubt I would have many references to said culture and times. I dont really see it as 'insulting', no more so that the thousands of horror/zombie films that already exist. My aim was not to 'insult' anyone, but merely forefill the brief given to me: 'a religious figure as a zombie'. If I were to produce Buddha as a zombie it wouldnt have less of a meaning and impact for the band and they would have probably asked me to do a priest. The band are from the west and therefore, being like most metal bands- want to offend western sensibilities. Maybe if I had chose to portray Mohammed you run the risk of having loads of angry racists championing the t-shirt and thinking they had the design done for racist and political reasons, when they really just wanted 'something cool and gorey', much like the decades of metal music imagry before them and that will continue for a very long time. I do feel strongly about organised religion- any religion, but I dont see how some stupid bad t-shirt drawing of a dumb zombie can hold any weight in an intelligent argument for or against anything.
