nice work Sonne! i have to object to this new trend of watercolor in the bg thing. seems alot of people are doing it, im already getting irritated at it. i know it adds artsyness to the composition, but i feel like it ruins the time you took to do a good illustration by cluttering it up with a easy fix. thats IMO so, please dont take offense. stuff is difficult to separate and get just right on a tshirt too since although it seems like one color, its actually shades of one color which to get right on a shirt, you have to use at least two if not more shades of one ink color to manage. unless CMYK, but thats different story. blah blahblahbalhalblahbalsdflh

go and sit at the Design Nazi table Jim. hahahah.
:) true. im a total bitch. i just get bored of seeing the same design aesthetic get birthed, and see it spreading over the shirt contest sites. you know youve seen this before. its nothing against the art or the artist. cause the illustration is good. i think just throwing a texture on there haphazardly does not compliment the design.
here's a more useful crit.
use the watercolor outside of the face, and then inside of the face, use the colors in the watercolor elements and use it to shade the face. that way you keep the random artsy on the outisde the face, and then you keep the nice ilustration from being obstructed by otherwise half heartedily added broohaahaa.
IMO IMO.
here's what im talking about
little too blue maybe, but integrate the watercolor texture into real shading. take it a step further. still uses the texture a bit, by overlaying the new layer on the texture, but not so intensely messy. more fluid.
personally I love the watercolor.. and to me its just a style it doesnt take away from anything unless its not what appeals to you. for instance.. illustrations can be kick ass but not my style at all. and I dont think he did a random fix.. the watercolor itself looks like it was meaningfully placed and well composed.
haha i go away for a day and come back to the watercolor debate of the century here. i knew as soon as i started throwing watercolors in it, i was gonna get an earful at emptees. in my defense, i've never done anything with watercolors in it before, and i just thought it would tie in to the whole nautical theme of the piece. i do agree with you jimiyo, i don't like how watercolors have just become a fad to throw into a piece. my use of them was deliberate in this case and i worked for a while to get them to look like they flowed properly.
