So I am in the beginning stages of getting a website and all that, and doing up a me only line.
So looking at it, the goat head dude although it is my favorite would make for a shity shirt, much as I hate to say it. So I am going to go for a poster for that one.

Thoughts on what you see.

Moved my breakdown in here so it's not culturing up the other one.
Might as well make this a let it all out, tell me your fail stories post. Get the tissues kiddos.

My lack of sales has made me a cranky pants.
Limited edition check
Free shipping check.
Signed original artwork check
sexy models not check
pimped site not check
packaging not check
Promotion check
-It was linked up for a week with a discount code at Cameesa
-Defiantly not just on Emptees. I did several all night cluster fuck whorefest
-American Apparel check
-SEO up the ass check

But enough of my bitching and moaning.
The point is that I thought that I had done it right.

So All of the checks are a waste because I don't have a pimped site, nice boxes, and sexy models?
So anyone so inclined to click a link was greeted with a no name fucktard, and left immediately I guess. Listen to me, I'm being such a cry baby. I don't get it. I see a lot of shitty shirts that fly off the shelfs. What's the deal?

In my case I didn't want to pay xxx$$ for a custom site for just one shirt. That seems to be the nail in the coffin.
With my sales history I also didn't want to spend money to get more designs printed and have more boxes of fail on my hands. I would have had 4 shirts but I got a bad printer and well you know how that went.
I have my doubts that even if they had been printed good and I did have a pro site, I would still have a box of fail of my hands. It's not a matter of people not having the money, it's a big internet and I hit every nook and cranny I could find of it. You can have the post back, I have had this on my chest for a while, I guess I just got to suck it up again.

Long way of saying I just wanted to fit in I guess and had all the wrong reasons for getting any shirts printed in the first place. I'm 30 years old live with my mom and dad make 6,000 a year at the day job, hours are lame, I don't get enough clients to pay for rent's so I can't quit, I can't make a website so I can't get a desk job in any art related field. Wow I am a loser.

Well better get to work making something of myself before I'm dust and bones I guess.

I don't want to hear how good I am or anything encouraging. I know I'm ace. Just got a case of the boo hoos today. Onward and upward.

Anyone else want to let all out? Come on sweet cheeks I saved you a shoulder.

First an observation about the psychology of Emptees locals

The business serious chats and the playful tomfoolery chat get's mixed up and I think that is what causes a lot of drama around here.

I like to have legitimate business opportunities come here, because it beats me having to go out and look for them myself. (Shirtfight for example)

But this is not and never will be one of those bid for artist sites I hate so much. I think it's a degrading way to hire an artist, to throw a job under the table and let us fight it out like dogs.

People coming here for business need to understand that this is not an artist for hire site. It's a community for people that just happen to be into the same stuff. It's a place to hang out after a hard day starring at pixels. You (business people) are talking shop off the clock and often times we are not in the mood to deal with any art related bullshit durning our play time.

Also We (the community) should NOT be treating people that are trying to give us money like shit all the time even if it is a shity offer.

Maybe the business people don't know it's a shity offer because this is how a lot of transactions between business people and artist go down. It's normal from their perspective, and don't think they are doing anything wrong. Or they are legitimately ignorant and need to be educated on how we roll.
Or perhaps they are indeed fucktards. In all cases they should be either ignored or told what's up.

For the business people.

It's our choice wether or not we want to participate in these often shity offers.
Our reluctance to be professional about it has to do with either it's a shity offer to begin with, or maybe we would rather chill out and forget about deadlines and mortgages and not talk shop with some random douche that thinks he has the next best thing in tee shirts since the wet tee shirt contest.

Experience has taught many of us to see red flags and run away or fight about it. Do this art for money thing long enough and everyone gets screwed to some degree or another at some point sooner or later.

The Proper way to Hire an Artist.

-Get an idea of what your customer wants.
-Research portfolios/
-Contact Artist That matched that style.
-Email them all the information they need.
-Agree on terms and begin
-Keep communication open until project is completed.
-Pay what for the artwork according the agreed upon terms.

The proper way to hire an artist is to first know what you want in detail. Have your facts and figures ready for your first email.

In your brief describe what you want the design to include visually. (this will help you search by look or style rather then the general term "designer") Artist are visual people and not everyone of us can do every style under the sun. You are going to need a specialist if you want the best results, this is not a job for a multi tool you will be needing a precision instrument. With that in mind look for things that you already like.

Other useful information

Number of colors This will effect your cost as well as how the artwork is created, It is better to know this from the start rather the later on as it is hard to change later on.

Not all printers can handle large numbers of screens 4-8 is recommended.

This is entirely up to the you the client. You should always base judgments on what you think your customer will really go for. You will have to be selling these remember you don't want to make that job any harder by skimping on what will make for a really great product.

Budget, (expect to pay between $150 and up) The price is determined by the artist in your first email, pay what they ask not what you think they are worth.

This is where things always get sour. In an artist for hire situation, The artist is the service provider therefore they determine the price not the client.

This is a respect issue, many of us have spent a life time, or a ton of money going to university or both to get good at the skills we have and let's face it not everyone can draw that well. It is the difference between a really great product and a cheap knock off. You should want to provide for your customers the very best or why even bother making anything at all.
To be blunt It's an ugly enough world already without adding any more to it feel me.

Like wise an artist should provide the very best for their client, it makes no sense to do a poor job with your name all over it if you ever hope to have a successful career making money for drawing stuff. If you don't think you can do a good job then don't take the job. It will save you and the client a lot of headaches.

The artist payment may or may not be negotiable it's up to you (the client) and them (the artist) what you want the terms of payment to be.) Agree on this before anything else. These should be made in closed door emails between clients and artist directly. Do not move forward until you are clear on all your terms. Do not post a general open call. You will get people that may or may not be what you are looking for. Remember you need a specialist not a multi tool, take some time to find someone you like and send them an available for hire type email) You should know what your customer wants more then anyone else. Use that to guide you.

It is ok to give examples of what you are looking for in a brief. It is NEVER ok for you to ask one of use to copy another persons work. Example: If You want the cover of Alice and Wonderland on a shirt. You are out of luck. Come up with something better or god forbid you talk to your designer and listen to there ideas.

I would like to see a separation between the serious business post and well everything else.

Have some clear do's and Don't for people looking to hire an artist.
and have a Jobs column on the front page for people looking for work as well as a separate section on the top.

I think keeping the business people and the off the clock fun time people separate is a good idea.
I can wear a suit and tie and be polite and use proper grammar when I need to. Some times I just like to drink beer and make fart noises.

Please feel free to add to this or make any corrections necessary.

Artist and Clients lets all hug it out ok. Peace.

I'm not that good at this yet, but I thought some of you might like this mini tut, If you have a better way please share.

Ok here is a mini tut for making seamless tiles in Illustrator Cs 4

Ha ha ha, I was so dog tired when I made this. It's horrible and slightly entertaining, but mostly useless enjoy watching my brain fry before your very eyes. zzzzzzzzz

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iDmreDWTFvE

You will need
-New Doc 400x400px or something square
-The blob brush tool (Shift+b)
-Isolation Mode (double click on your path)
-Group (command+g) & ungroup (shift+command+g)
-Graphic styles Additive library.(found with the lower left sub menu)
We need Live reflect X and live reflect Y
Note: use (Option+click to add graphic style) when the time is right.

Ok there are two ways I know of to make patterns in Illustrator.
One is to simply drop any doodle in the swatches panel.
You can then select it as a pattern fill. This is fast, but lacks control.

Thanks to Sunday for this extra info:
You can then drag the doodle out of the swatches to get the original and edit it, then when you are ready alt or option drop in over the previous pattern fill and it will update, neato.

My way.

1. Make a square 400x400px with no fill and a black stroke.
This is a guide only so lock it. (command + Number 2)
To unlock later use (option and command together + Number 2)

2. Ok make a stroke with the blob brush.
Select it (v)

3. Option click the Live reflect X graphic style twice
do the same with the Live reflect Y graphic style.

You will now have a grid of instances (non editable copies)
-or are they muah ha ha.

4. Now the magic part.
(v) to select & Double click it to enter isolation mode.
(shift+b) for blob brush.

Now when you draw near the parent object, the instances will all be updated on the fly. Tweak and doodle your hearts out people.

To make it all clean Hold the option key with your eraser tool, this will give you a rectangular deal you can use to get a nice clean edge across the whole doodle. Do that to the sides so it lines up all nice, Don't trim to much off, try and keep it more or less in the original guide square.

To remove the graphic styles just ungroup the parent object.
You will then see a list of Transform fx in the appearance panel, you can just dump the instances and keep your file all nice and small for later.

Cheers.

You have all been so nice I'll try and break down what's going on with my new style.

The more sophisticated the starting shape the more refinements I can make later.

For random shapes, the results very, often times I just dump it and start over.

Here is one of my warm up exercises.

For this style I think differently then when I draw with traditional ink. I try to create a fence for the design first then let loose inside. It allows for a sort of stream of conciseness while still maintaining all the characteristics that make what I am trying to draw recognizable.

It's a bit to random at the moment, I rely on symmetry to generate additional shapes to play in.

1. I'll draw the left half first keeping the right side of the doodle vertical and open to avoid crossover. I make a continuous sweeping stroke to create some areas for positive and negative space. The outer edges are intended to be general facial points, cheeks, chin, brow line nose ect. I am in essence drawing the middle first.

2. Then I'll reflect and copy to see how it lines up, then change the color on the right half to gray and lock it.

3.Then I switch back in forth between thinking of the design as a whole, and working on the left half refining things and adding detail. I'll repeat step 2 several times to see what happens, and guide my process.

4.I continue to work both sides of the drawing, letting the shapes compete for most interesting, and helping the shapes along with distinctive marks nostrils, eye balls, "C" shaped, parallel lines to form some curves, banding or stripes.

5. At some point I will group the two and treat it as one shape, then begin blending the middle where the two join, and adding differing marks to either side to change the balance as needed.
(if I am happy with it I skip this step and begin coloring)

6. I work in grayscale first, and add colors last. This is to ensure that when I do pick colors there is enough value and contrast between them so that they are interchangeable. Shading and lighting are reversible.
(not really but I pretend they are, it adds to the whole feel)

I use a neutral gray background, and begin with a white or light gray base covering all of the interior line work.

7. I use a light, mid, and dark gray
each on it's own layer working from lightest to darkest.
I use this order because lighter things are forward and darker things seem farther back.
It's a way of giving it depth or focus.

8. I then group and reflect my color layers to line up with the other half.
Here is what it looks like naked.

9. I use the change color options to randomly see what color combo I like best.
To get to if. Select artwork and click Recolor Artwork (It's the button that looks like a color wheel in the top tool bar.)
Or find it with the main application window. Edit>Edit Colors>Recolor Artwork
From here you can change color order, by clicking the randomly change color order button in the Assign tab.
or manually change color in the Edit tab.

Here are a few of my results.

10. It gets really interesting when you start to repeat the shape and set it to multiply, the stokes become hatched where they overlap and it takes on a stained glass look.
It helps to remember that I am reusing the eyes both as front on view and profile view for both faces on both sides.

  U.S. Trendy

Coroflot has a hard to Remember name so bookmark it.
This site has a job search feature, and clients seem less shy to contact artist directly. I highly recommend it.

  Coroflot

Carbon Made is a great place to showcase your top 10. Great for people who may have a large body of work and want to link clients to career highlights

  Carbon Made

Behance has a bulk of features, including the inner circle, which is great for summoning demons most foul, or that next hush hush epic T.O.T.D. contender

  Behance

Yay Art is not really a portfolio site. More of a mix of group art show, and contest. Someone has to keep an eye on those messy painter types.

  Yay Art

If Rubbing with the big boys is more your thing. Linked In Is the Adult site of the group.

Linked In

Flickr. If it's good enough for Wotto, It's good enough for me.

  Flickr

Drip Book. umm..I'm going to cheat on this one and look it up.
Dripbook offers its worldwide community of "professional" visual artists the easiest, most stylish way to play, promote and distribute their portfolios online.(Thanks to Killer Napkins for this these last two by the by.)

  Drip Book

And finally... The site below is obviously a bistro for art, and who wouldn't want to give that a good firm click.
