I dont know if you guys would be into this, but there are some forums I frequent and they share albums with eachother. It helps me get into music that I would never have been into before.
Ive always wondered about the ethics of this. Like I never think twice about downloading someones album that someone shares, but I always feel guilty about uploading someones album because I know how hard people work to make these albums. Especially if Ive met the band members.
I have some stuff Id like to share with people for the sole purpose of either a) promoting that band to a larger audience or b) returning the favor to other members and not leeching everyones albums without uploading myself.
What are your thoughts?

you guys really might want to be careful about this, considering this is a very public site.
just a thought.
Ivoryline is not really on a small label even though they are an unknown band.

wow they are one of only three bands on tooth and nail without a wiki page, talk about being left out.

I am a music pirate to the fullest extent.
Never uploaded, always downloaded.
;D
I have been turned on to a lot of music via the forums and boards I frequent and have seen a lot of hard working bands get posted.
Although I have thought of the ethics of this, I try and do my part to help out the bands I like. I recommend them to my friends and help spread the word if they deserve it.

Perhaps the mods can make a thread "private" meaning only certain registered users with XXX number of posts can read it?

Alex! yes! Band of horses rock. I saw them live with Modest Mouse. it was amazing.
jfinley said 10 months ago
Oh shit, haha, I totally forgot about those recordings.
hideouscarwreck said 10 months ago
i never ever ever ever do that. my friends hate me because i wont burn them cds. but first off i paid for the cd, you can too, and second off, it doesnt support the music scene.
jfinley said 10 months ago
Everyone on emptees SHOULD sign up for Simplify Media, thatd be great!
Btw, if anyone wants anything from my library, email me and I could send you stuff.
ThinkBaker said 10 months ago
How so? in the last 20mins. I bought two cds from itunes because of hearing stuff in others itunes folders.
I supported the bands. Besides its not stealing if you can only hear online. right? just like a radio.
jfinley said 10 months ago
My bands (By Bread Alone) practice recordings are on there- which are all new and not supposed to be heard by anyone yet. So if you listen to it, obviously, their shitty rough recordings - not even demo quality stuff. Just a disclaimer - listen at your own discretion!
Also, every single track Ive made (BOXOMYLK) electronically is in my library too, so those usually arent supposed to be heard by the public either. This could be embarassing.
ThinkBaker said 10 months ago
Everyone should check out "How I Became the Bomb" in my library, their a local pop-electro group. They put on on sweet-ass live show.
besides, you cant go wrong when you have songs called "Kneel before Zod"!

A while back I traded my ipod for a zune. Mainly because my friend bought a mac and I had a pc but now I have a mac and kind of regret it.
So I do not have any songs on my itunes for this mac but can I still sign up for Simplify?
nadameansnothing.com said 10 months ago
totally AGREED!...i do the same thing. cmon guys how many of you guys does cd artworks? cause i do and i love special and cool cd artworks...and downloading not also takes the artist work away it is also our work as art directors/designers/artist/whatever...support independent media.
derekdeal said 10 months ago
i get what youre saying, but maybe do a little research, all simplify media is, is a way to stream your itunes like an internet radio station amongst friends. Its the same thing as letting someone borrow your ipod, or listening to a cd together. Most of the music in my playlist is paid for, and if someone wants access to what i have, they are going to have to pay for it too.

i wish simplify worked with windows media. my whole librarys on there, and i dont really want to go through winamp for music.
justgeoff said 10 months ago
I download music like mad. If I like what I hear then I go buy it. Plus I love buying/owning CDs. To me it forces bands to always bring their A game. Im not going to pay for an album with one or two good songs and 10 songs of filler. I think its insulting to the fans.

can someone let me know about my situation I posted a few up?
ThinkBaker said 10 months ago
About the signing up thing? I dunno, I think you have to have Itunes for it to work... I could be wrong though.
BUT i gotta say this SM deal is friggin sweet! its like my own little emptees radio! I love it. Ive discovered all kinds of new stuff that I love from you guys! thanks!
MadeByMAS said 10 months ago
Ok so I guess I need to get some music onto itunes before I sign up. I would love to listen to other empteers music but I guess no one would want to join with me being I have no music on there.
Somone just told me about soulseek has anyone used that?

“Ive always wondered about the ethics of this. Like I never think twice about downloading someones album that someone shares"
Finley, consider that these share sites are popping up like crazy, and how much money some of the big ones must be making from ads (and some of them with subscriptions). Do you know how much of this money is shared with the artists and labels? Nothing at all. If an artists album is downloaded 1,000,000 times from share sites, they see not a thing, but 1 mil hits equals very good business for the share site. The ad revenue & subscription money is significant.
Aside from that, distributing someones music "for them" is not just illegal it is truly unethical. Ill admit, like you, I have no problem downloading in most cases - major artists, albums I cant find elsewhere - but downloading/uploading indie artists through share sites is really just doing a disservice to a small creative businessperson.
RustyEight said 3 months ago
As an artist, I actually dont care either way. If my music is not being shared, then I get to keep the profits. If it is shared, then more people have access to my music... which in the long term could lead to profits.
Its a win win.
