    when close your eyes blur the lines together, covering up the image underneath. there’s color to the image so the line weight being thicker where the image is theory doesn’t work.

    I zoomed into it in PS and I reckon that the background image is grayscale and parts of it are blocked out obviously by the white and black lines, but the image is one pixel wide in between these lines and your eyes/brain trick you into seeing it as colour..and make up the missing parts of the image.
