I got lots of good feedback from my last process post, so I figured Id give it another go. A few other artists seemed interested in posting theirs - Hopefully well get a few more this time. It would be awesome.
This is for my latest tee-off entry:
http://emptees.com/tees/6781-tee-off-round-2-prince-of-sin
I went about it a little different this time. I liked the outcome.. Here goes.
Prince Of Sin Design Process
I started out this guy with research, but no reference photos. I researched the sins, and the demons associated with them. I was going to draw each demon, but decided Id rather draw one thing well than 7 things, not so well.
Once I felt like I had researched enough I started a couple of character sketches. I had to do these guys at work, and make it look like I was doing something official.. Ignore the lined paper. Haha.

When I was happy with the character, I did a tighter sketch on some decent paper. Had to cut it in two to scan it.

Then I fixed a few small things in the sketch, and freehanded some skulls with the wacom.

I still didnt know what I wanted to do for the face, but I needed to keep going, so I started inking him at this point. Because Reilly suggested it, I inked this guy in painter-x. I used a brush based on Frendens settings, and I made it red to contrast the black sketch and keep me from getting confused. Pretty basic.

I decided that he needed to have my face, I just traced a picture of me making a mean face for that.
I had some sweet suggestions from other emptee-ers to make it the crazy canadian greyhound bus guy, but was afraid it was too soon.
Once I got the Ink mostly done I asked a few people their opinions and got some really great feedback. Once I applied as much of it as I could(some of it would have taken me too long to meet the deadline), I saved it as a photoshop file, and went back to black on the outlines.

Everything from here-out was done in photoshop. I laid out the basic color, which went pretty smooth.

At this point I purchased an amazing go-media vector pack of ornate flourishes. I cut them out, an laid them over my characters skin. I tried really hard to make them work with the flow that the image already had.
This crap took forever. Haha.

I started playing with shading on his left arm until I found something I was happy with. Then I blocked the rest of the body out in my first shade.
I spent alot of my time trying to make sure it explained the volume correctly, and that it accented the outlines to make them a level of shading in themselves.

Then I did a second layer of shading:

I was really stumped on a background. I kind of like it without a background. Anyway I drew some people hanging from nooses and put them behind the guy for texture.
One of the dead people is emptees own Ramvere, except I gave him Guido hair. Haha. Take that, Ramvere.

Thats pretty much it. Thanks for looking. I hope you enjoyed it.
If anyone has other stuff to post. That would be amazing.

Reading this and realize you traced your face with a mean expression made me realize the only thing that bothered me about this (besides the giant wang with veins that are going to burst satan blood all over me) was the face. Not that your face is bothersome! Just that it seemed to human. So I guess you did too good a job of tracing your face, it would have been sweet if he had a more evil or somehow exaggerated face (especially the mouth) or was super ugly or had an obnoxious mole or something

Amazing seeing your progress I really like how this one is way more in depth than your last one. This design turned out so badass and showed what you can do, and raised the level for you.
Im really glad you showed your original sketches too even though they werent used. Badass dude! Thanks for the mention even though you gave me guido hair... bastard. haha

Thanks Jayna. He probably would have had alot more character if I drew him by hand. Something about tracing photographs just doesnt translate well into Comic Characters. Thanks a ton for the crit. You rock.
Ramvere - I only gave you guido hair because I love you. Haha. Thanks dude.

We are finally done with corn, and that makes me happier than I have ever been about a vegetable. Silking corn is the worst thing ever. Right up there with cutting it from the cob.
Other than that, everything is peachy. We even had a cantaloupe come up from last year in the middle of our green beans and it was tasty! Haha.
Soon it will be cool enough to finish planting my fall garden. Im excited for turnip greens and carrots.

God I wish I had my old phone with me right now - had this photo on there of work where they were doing these maize experiments and had to husk and silk all the corn. There was a pile as high as me and about 3 metres across. Thats a lot o' corn! Worst of all they were just chucking it into a big grinding thing.
We were supposed to be have a corn party or something. Didnt happen unfort!

Oh man, thats terrible. Haha. We definitely didnt have that much.
We filled a standing deep freezer with blanched corn on the cob, and we made about 30 jars of canned whole kernel corn. It really took alot more corn to make the canned type than you would think.
There were only 3 of us doing most of the work, that made it rough too. My son helped, but hes 5, mostly he just aggrivated everyone. Haha.

Damn, thats still a lot of corn. Well now at least you get to eat it hey? All this talk about corn makes me want to eat some creamed corn. It just freaking snowed where I am! Sooo cold!
