Ok I'm trying to find crazy movies that I haven't seen yet. Last night I started watching one of those types. Anyone ever seen THX 1138? I couldn't believe I'd never heard of it! Great cinematography and overall fucking crazy.
So yeah, anyone else know of cool mind fuck movies? (besides the obvious Pi, Requiem, Science of Sleep, Being John Malkovich...etc).

As far as movies that I thought were fucked up: The Cell. It may have been shitty and starred Jennifer Lopez but it was fucking freaky (from what I can remember from 8 years ago).

machinist does rule. and the orphanage is amazing as well. and while on that guillermo del toro note, Pan's Labyrinth.
i fucking hate being john malkovich, and lost in translation, i don't think it's possible for me to not care more about any other movie than those.

i just hated every single character in being john malkovich, i just wished everyone would fucking die, maybe i just don't get it.
Begotten is a film i keep away from a lot of people, considering the last person i let borrow it was a 30 some year old man who watched about 20 minutes of it and then went and turned every light on in his house, brought it back to me and said "that wasn't real, right?"
I DO!
Master_Control said 2 months ago
it's definitely different. can't say i enjoyed it too much though.

funny games is amazing. it's like watching rape, only, there's no rape, or really, violence for that matter, it makes you feel like a terrible person just by watching it, good times.

It is called that.. There is also a second (it's not great), and apparently they're doing an American re-make.
Trust the American's to ruin a good film!

I live in America and I couldn't agree more. Almost all of our movies are remakes, or comic book movies now. I personally love indie films because they give at least some freshness and originality. And most foreign films are kick ass.
One film that im not sure if it "leaves me speechless" but is really good is called 13 Tzameti. I think it was italian? but its sweet, check it out.

FIGHT CLUB
duh.
jfinley said 2 months ago
For those of you into Harmony Korine (Gummo, Julien Donkey Boy) or Larry Clark (Kids, Ken Park, Bully) then you're next step to film greatness needs to be to watch some Werner Herzog, Alan Clarke, and Mike Leigh.
Essential Viewing:
Werner Herzog:
Aguirre the Wrath of God
Stroszek
Even Dwarves Started Small
Mike Leigh:
Naked (highly recommend see image)
Secrets and Lies
All or Nothing
Alan Clarke:
Made in Britain
The Firm
For all those who think Mulholland Drive, Eraserhead, Pi, Requiem for a Dream, and Donnie Darko are great films - then you owe it to yourself to start getting into these other directors. I felt the same way 5 or 6 years ago.
skullface said 2 months ago
I most highly recommend
Paprika
Sublime
and a lot of these were mentioned in that other indie movie thread...
American Psycho (Christian Bale leaves me speechless)
The Nin9s
Layer Cake
The Fountain
The Machinist
Southland Tales
Perfume
Slipstream
Lucky Number Slevin
of course Donnie Darko!
and Alice in Wonderland
landshark said 2 months ago
FTW! I enjoy films on all levels (hollywood to independent to student) but i find it rather annoying when films like Requiem For a Dream, Being John Malcovich and the like are considered to be the essential dark/art/experimental flicks. It is like considering Panic! At The Disco to be an underground band, and it is a disservice to the great work of many hardworking directors (you named a few).
I know I sound like I'm attacking and I know more than others, but film doesn't get the same kind of outlets of other mediums. We have endless access to musicians on myspace and stuff, but many films aren't distributed, put out on dvd, or even made onto the festival circuit, so awareness of what is out there is significantly less. It's unfortunate.
On a side note, Herzog was once shot at and then asked that police not try and find the shooter as there are worse problems in the world. BAD ASS!
Master_Control said 2 months ago
dude great suggestions. i'm definitely a fan of the latter so i'll definitely be looking into these.

i know exactly what you're saying and i feel the same way. a lot of people are underexposed and it's due to the lack of exposure. that's why i posted this in this community because i know there is an abundance of good taste and creativity lurking amongst the older more knowledgeable dudes.

samlindstrom said 2 months ago
Naw dude the Cell was fucking amazing. Watch it in HD, definitely cool man. Super trippy but amazing visuals. Omg cool movie
Master_Control said 2 months ago
i can honestly say i've watched that movie more than anyother movie (not to rub it in!). i literally watched it each night for a week straight before i went to bed because it gave me the craziest most amazing dreams. i still watch it from time to time when i have trouble sleeping.
i borrowed it from a friend the first time seeing it, but i just recently downloaded it from mininova.
and if you haven't seen 13 zameti, definitely watch it. that movie is fucking crazy.

here is a mixture of movies big and small, new and old, that i love:
american beauty
sideways
mr. death (all errol morris documentaries are great)
the public enemy (early standard for gangster flicks)
strictly ballroom (for those that like christopher guest)
freaks
bonnie and clyde
cinema paradiso (one of the most popular and great foreign films)
toy story
i need to get to some festivals this fall. so many movies aren't picked up by distributers, and that's your only chance to see them. the system now seems to work in a way that independent films have to fit into a certain niche in order to be picked up, which defeats the importance of independent film.

godmachine said 2 months ago
The CEll was weak- it was all visuals and no substance- a complete flop from the guy who only did REM music videos before the film.
Naked by Mike leigh is awesome- totally related to that when I was an angry young man.
Big respect to Finley and a lot of you guys for knowing 'real' cinema. Some people think 'films' is handcock and terminator- where people value big budget effects of actual content.
Film is the greatest of all the arts because its linear and therefore is the closest to 'real' life.
World cinema sections are always greatly understocked - check your local library for great films- they always turn up there.

I can definitely understand and somewhat agree with that opinion, but I would be lying if I said that both the visuals and some aspects of the story weren't both surprising and entertaining...with that said, yes the story was kinda weak looking back at it
