Affliction Clothing or Affliction MMA?

posted 4 months ago by Eternyl

Anyone know the business details with the Affliction Banned MMA event this Saturday?...

I can’t imagine they have the kind of capital/clout to pull something like trying to take out the UFC.

I know they are very popular and expensive shirts, with alot of MMA fighters wearing them....but damn....that is a pretty big jump for a "clothing label"

I seen Trump in the ring at the end....is this his venture?...anyone hear if he a partner in this?

I ordered it, and it was pretty slow...although the Fedor vs Couture bout would be sweet.

I’m not sure about the whole deal either. Seemed sketchy to me. I watched it at Buffalo Wild Wings, and it was ok. So yea. Sorry I don’t have anything more than my confused opinion.

P.s. what’s gonna be next??? If we see Tapout come out and make their own called like "Tapout Bouts" we’ll know something’s up. haha

mmmm Spicy Garlic...and Mango Habenero wings.

Pretty interesting a Clothing Co can play hardball with the UFC, just 3 years after it’s creation.

it’s pretty heated obviously...since UFC put up their Free PPV on Spike to counter the Affliction Debut.

I don’t know all the full details but basically Affliction and Dana White had a falling out. Thats why they added the "banned" to the title. Alot of previous UFC fighters are leaving when their contract ends (Tim Silvia) because they feel they aren’t being payed enough or unequally, etc...

There was an article about UFC vs. Afflication in Saturday’s Los Angeles times. Supposedly there is a TON of money behind the Affliction thing... Trump being one of the main investors.

All these MMA things just need to all get together. It’s too splintered the way it is and the quality of each is hurting the overall.

I think that UFC got too big, too fast. Way too many sponsors and corporate stuff got thrown in the mix too quick.

And I type this as I’m working on their new line of retail rash guards....

Not even true, thank you competing organizations for giving me numerous free fights on spike tv like saturday’s ufc fight. Also thank you alternative fight league’s like affliction for brining back some of my favorite fighters to the U.S. like fedor and josh barnett who didn’t want to contract with the ufc.

The ufc unlike boxing contracts fighters and gives them a salary for the year(s). This discouraged and kept away a lot of japan’s "pride" fighters who didn’t want to get held down with a contract with ufc. Having these other league’s allows them the opportunity to get back into the fight spotlight and provide good mma entertainment.

Although ufc is awesome I don’t want them to hold a monopoly on the fight market because it was missing a lot of my favorite fighters.

Personally I think it’s Dana White....I just seems like he’s gotten too Greedy...and decided it’s cheaper to get new fighters through a reality show, than to pay big bucks to retain veteran fighters.

They have been corporate-ized lately...but they’ve been around since 93...up until Spike / Harley / Bud...their biggest sponsor was Mickey’s or sumthin.

That may be somewhat true but I see it in a lot of the fighters too. I mean money is money but I saw two different fighters with the Bad Boy logo tattooed on their ribs. I highly doubt that was a coincidence. ha

Up until Saturday there were only two official full MMA organizations that held belts and titles. And, that’s only one belt per weight class. Now add affliction and that’s three. Not too hard to keep track of.

I feel like competing organizations is a good thing. Like i said free fights that would have normally been pay-per-view and it allows "veteran" fighters to still fight since not all of them want to be tied down to a contract with the ufc.

Well the "cheap way" of getting new fighters (which i find entertaining because these guys work hard) worked. Forrest Griffin who was a nobody before TUF 1 beat Rampage jackson who was not only the UFC world champion, but was a champion at one point in pride too.

So their "cheap way" bred a world champion who’s had so many good fights with world class fighters.

Exactly...good point....which is probably why, Dana prefers that route.

What is the winning sum for the reality show?....a six figure contract?...that’s probably $100,000....for a year?

I know Affliction just paid alot more for 1 fight(Fedor is rumored to be making more than $1 million guaranteed and Sylvia is set to pocket at least $800,000).

100k as a brand new fighter is not bad money at all. They get tested and it’s been three years at least since griffin won TUF. He gets paid a lot more now.

I think of it like skateboarders, they make a little on skateboarding contracts but MILLIONS off of endorsements. This is a fast growing market and the opportunity for them to make huge piles of money is there. They aren’t being cheated.

I wonder how much Harley paid to put that Bar & Shield logo in the middle of the ring?...the past few PPV’s
Or Bud Light in this last Spike Event?
    those are some serious sponsors.

to say the least it’ll be interesting how long they retain Forrest, or even Rampage now.

or if affliction is going to pursue all of the big names.

i think affliction is some of the ugliest apparel, and i rarely see anyone wearing it who is not a chache. but really though, this is really interesting, i had no idea they were this huge. i had a friend who ditched out on college, aspiring to be in the UFC. haha

I think affliction designs were very trend-setting and are still pretty cool. They are elaborate and whoever does those designs is talented.

However, im not paying that much for a shirt, and I don’t want to be lumped with the people who wear them. Besides the fighters, I can’t stand the people who wear them. Douche-bag bro’s that spend way too much time at frat parties, the gym and the desert.

i’ll give them that for sure! the illustrations are beatifuuuullllly done for what they are

but i just wish they weren’t always tarnished by placement, or some hideously cheesy old english-esque font, and lame distressing.

i just have a huge pet-peeve when it comes to the department-store "aggressive/alternative" art exploitation.

back to whoever said the UFC grew too fast, i don’t think it grew too fast. It still has a lot of growing to do, same with every all the mma organizations WEC, Elite XC, Affliction, etc. The average fan doesn’t really know what mma is and mma doesn’t have a face. Unless you’re a fan you really wouldn’t know about Royce Gracie or B.J. Penn, Matt Hughes, Urijah Faber, etc. Slowly MMA will have someone in the spotlight...that’s good. Rampage Jackson would’ve been great to promote, but now he lost and plus got arrested twice last week. Chuck The Iceman Lidell is good to promote, just sucks that he had some recent losses. If someone ever mentions Kimbo, than they don’t know what they are talking about. He has a long way to go and the good fighters need to be shown to the public more.

Anyone know if the fight of Fedor and Slyvia is still online. I totally forgot about both fights this Saturday.
I’m a fan of Affliction, but since I went to a club one night and saw everyone rocking it and they were everyone’s favorite, guidos, I was so turned off by wearing it. I love good illustrations, but hey Affliction knows how to get people to buy. They had a couple investors, besides Trump.
