work?

Hey people, sorry if there’s been a post about this before ill delete it if someone can link to one.

Basically i wanted to know how most of you go about getting jobs from companies and bands.

Did you start off by doing free jobs?

or did you do the design and approach the client with it already done?

or ask for work?

I don’t know which is best or if there’s other ways, i could really do with a little guidance to get some work out there.

   there are a few posts, but i’m too lazy to search right now.
   DON’T EVER DO FREE JOBS, EVERRRRRRRRR
   that being said, do a bunch of personal projects, don’t attach any names to any of it, just do what you want, build a portfolio of work, and then start cold e-mailing bands, asking if they are looking for designs. myspace works, but it’s a lot better to get in contact with their management or the band directly.
   right now i do work for a booking agency, and the guy manages a few bands as well. I’ve done a few spec work things, which never got accepted, but now i can probably work on those designs and sell them to someone that really wants them for more than i would have gotten through the spec.
   Just promote yourself, and make sure that all work you do is work you’re proud of, eventually they’ll come to you.

   DON’T do free jobs.

   Lots of people start out approaching brands or bands they like. I did a few, designs ready.

   After a while and a bit of exposure, they’ll (hopefully) start coming to you. But if you ever do want to work for someone, it couldn’t hurt to just ask I guess?

   Edit: Randomentity covered it pretty much. And yeah, early on maybe try and not make it toooo specific to the band, so you can flip it later for someone else, and so your time isn’t ultimately wasted.

   oki dokie no no on free jobs :) an yea im just working on putting up a good portfolio of my work.

   Also small clothing brands and bands come here looking for artist just upload some shirts you’ve done so people can see your style and what you can do. I come here when I need a artist and I know theirs other like me
