Dear Homosexuals,
Hi, how are you? I am reaching out to you as a community with a growing concern of mine. Before I start, I wanted to set a bit of precedent. I have always supported your community and defended your rights in many debates with people I consider to be ignorant. Along the same lines, I couldn't be happier for your new found rights in California. I hope the rest of the nation can catch own quickly- and if our current wise president is truly all about states rights, it shouldn't be too much of problem.
That being said, I have a few problems I would like to discuss. I feel you are being very selfish in some sections of the gay "branding". I feel you have taken more than your fair share of symbols to declare yourself. First it was a rainbow. I have no problem with this and I think you are more then welcome to this symbol, even though Demetri Martin might have a problem with it. Next it was adapting the color pink because it is a feminine color and you might feel you can identify to a woman's interest more than a mans. I can understand that. But somewhere along the line the color purple was swiped as well- this is where my problem lies.
Having three symbols of declaration is just selfish to me. Why not just have one very powerful and all-encompassing symbol? I think the rainbow would be great for this. My problem is, I love the color purple. To be specific, I love #330033, also known as very deep purple. I think it is great for shirts and clothing and and very bold and beautiful color. In fact, it used to be the color of royalty- that is why a lot of coat of arms have purple in it. It was the color of royals because the dye for the clothing to become purple came from a very rare snail in the Mediterranean. If you want to have the color purple you had to pay big bucks for the gathering of these snails to crush them and take their extract for your clothing.
It bothers me that in society I am considered gay for wearing a purple tee. Maybe it isn't your communities fault as much as the rest of the nation for being ignorant. Either way, I would love to be able to support my purple tees without hesitation of reaction. I am a man secure in my sexuality, but I am tired of the questioning glances and rude stares.
Can we make this happen soon? Thank you. Again, I love what you stand for and am first to acknowledge all of the great people in history who have shaped our world who have been gay.
Sincerely,
Nate Maggio

uhhh maybe instead of "blaming" gay people for taking purple, you could just continue wearing purple and disregard what it makes others think of you...

You as straight men should take a symbol that gay men like....for example...puppies!

as hilarious as this is, i have to ask: did a specific subculture of the gay community take purple or are you referring to us a whole? the community is split into several different parts, and so come the different symbols. for example: the rainbow represents gay men, pink/triangles to lesbians, the pink/purple/magenta flag represents bisexuals and the lavender/light blue/white flag is synonymous with transsexuals.
if you're referring to the gay male community (which has the rainbow) then, um. can't help you there, buddy. pretty much the gay community at large uses some kind of shade of purple (i don't get it either.)
i agree with explodingtoes! just wear it, dude, we don't care/mind!
