   Have you managed to get yourself a copy of Illustrator yet? If not you could give www.inkscape.org - that way you can familiarise yourself with the vector world. It’s a free opensource program.

   Another freebie, which might be better off to start with is this program www.getpaint.com which is similar to Photoshop - so you can practice your colouring on the 'puter.
