Prog Rock?

posted 5 months ago by Joe

Don’t know if anybody here is into it at all... but I haven’t been able to get enough of King Crimson’s In the Court of the Crimson King since I first bought the album years ago.

Any suggestions for further listening?

These are excellent suggestions, thank you! Floyd/Zeppelin though are already covered. I decided Pink Floyd were my favorite band in high school, so I have nearly their entire amazing discography. I’m going to look into some jazz fusion, too.

Do they roar in every song, or just some? I’m not a big fan of the roaring :/ I saw some Empteers designing tees for them, so I kind of automatically assumed I wouldn’t like their music. Why does the guitar part of 'Ants of the Sky' sound like the guitar part of a song in Rock Band that I can’t put my finger on (i.e., what is the song that it’s reminding me of)? I might be able to get into the tracks that are sans roars.

dude. YES is my favorite prog rock band of all time. definitely check them out if you havent. Bill Bruford (YES drummer) actually left right after Close To The Edge and joined King Crimson just in time to record Larks Tounge and Aspic (which is my favorite Crimson Album)

wellll that album is a lot less growl-y and generic metal-y than their previous albums.

I take it you don’t like Protest the Hero then?

    Dream Theater
    Symphony X
    The Mars Volta

oh and Porcupine Tree for sure

60's & 70s garage/psych/prog is a huge part of what i listen to. if you are just getting into it and want some easy listens what cole listed is great, with an emphasis on led zeppelin.

but if you are trying to really branch out and get into it i have some suggestions of records that WILL NOT dissapoint.

Sir Lord Baltimore - Kingdom Come

    Aphrodite’s Child - 666

    Captain Beyond - S/T

if you want more i have tons i can point you to but these are essential.

if you don’t have a record player and would like to download these you may find that itunes is sorely lacking here is a great site that will help you get what you need...

    hope that helps meng!

If Protest the Hero like to growl, then I probably won’t like them... but I will definitely check all of these bands out! Thank you!

I’ve actually been reading up on this stuff on Wikipedia, which led me from King Crimson to Yes via Bruford. I’m really looking forward to listening to these albums in their entirety. Before tonight, I’d only heard the few Yes songs they play on the radio... but they have so much more that sounds so much more interesting that never gets radio play!

P.S. Thanks, SWH! Will for sure check all those out, because I would like to branch out.

My godfather, Tony Kaye, was the keyboard player for Yes back in the day. Right now he’s doing a new band called Circa: with some Yes members. Check it out:

Aw come on, he was the original keyboardist and he wrote a good amount of Yes songs that were recorded later by Rick Wakeman using his keyboard parts. You can’t tell me he’s bad.

    versus

dude, no contest. FIRST he wore a cape. second, his keyboard lines were sometimes crazier than what Steve Howe was playing, and that dude shreds.

And I guess it doesn’t really help that Tony was probably only 17 in that picture.

Nah he was actually really young there. He joined/started the band when he was 17. He looks much older now, trust me haha.

I’m also not denying that Rick Wakeman is an amazing keyboardist, but I feel that you need to give respect when it’s due and in this case, it’s due.

Ah, okay. That 3 were my other guess. Your taste in music is too hard/metal for me!

But after hours of listening, this is what I think I’m going to be buying for now. Gonna go sleep on it now.

    Captain Beyond - Captain Beyond
Kingdom Come - Sir Lord Baltimore
    666 - Aphrodite’s Child
Close to the Edge - Yes
In the Wake of Poseidon - King Crimson
    Mcdonald & Giles - Mcdonald & Giles
Larks Tongues in Aspic - King Crimson
H to He, Who Am the Only One - Van der Graaf Generator
    Fragile - Yes
    Hot Rats - Frank Zappa
    Brain Salad Surgery - ELP

I love my rewarding and well-paying summer job of teaching gifted kids board games (like this one) that’s enabling me to buy all of these in one go. After a lot of listening, I’m sure I’ll be back asking for more. Thanks so much for all the recommendations! Even though sometimes you fight, you’re all awesome.

    Ship High In Transit

they’re prog ska ... really cool subtle stuff that you can tell takes some talent.

    Rush

    Arch Enemy - Enemy Within

Les Claypool/Primus(anything by him) I personally love "Colonel Les Claypool’s Fearless Flying Frog Brigade"

Between the Buried and me - Mordecai (listen to the whole song!)

F.U.K.T. (Euro jungle trance? nope, LIVE BAND!) Anders Meinhardt is the drummer and has some crazy drumming tutorials on Youtube.

Minus The Bear (the hammer on/pull offs with weird time signatures is what I love about this band)

math rock and prog rock are a little different and i think minus the bear falls on the mathy side of the line.
