Deleting accounts

posted 4 months ago by ihearithurts

A few people have tried deleting their accounts recently and it would basically bring the site to a halt since there is so much content to delete. So we’ve now removed the "Delete Profile" link and you will need to contact us to manually delete your account.

Of course, the bigger issue here is people wanting to delete their accounts. Anybody have any ideas on how we can tame this beast from getting out of control? We don’t want to lose any more people from our community.

It’s hard. I know that, in my instance, having a delete button during a heated debate was a bad idea™.

In general, the site’s feel is dictated by its users. I’m not sure you have much more than cursory, editorial control of that. It’s definitely a tough situation.

I know you don’t want to be jack-booted moderation czars, either.

    Agreed.

This makes me think of the people who hold the button to drop nukes.

yeah I mean the users are steering this ship and if they want to run it a ground then that’s up to them. I’m not jumping ship anytime soon, but mutiny could be on the horizon.

Personally, I think that while some things are taken too far, everyone loves a good bit of drama (to a certain extent) - even if they don’t want to admit it.

It seems a bit rash to go and delete your account every time you get upset - which I would supposed Mr. Frenden understands now that he has decided to come back. Especially since Emptees is such a great tool for people in the industry.

I blame the Manticores for all the drama lately!!

It’s basically Emptees suicide. Maybe Frenden and other survivors can create an Emptees suicide prevention group to talk down others at risk.

Keep the content, just remove the login.. That way it works like any other forum.. losing archived content is invaluable to a community..

I would also suggest asking the users to write a codified constitution for emptees just stating logical things, which could be pinned in the forum. Or possibly a small terms and conditions to adhere to when signing up?

All topics which get too heated should be locked i guess? People would understand this more if it was told to be a rule of the site.

I know this is a relaxed community, but without rules, we are getting nowhere.

Deleting accounts = bad. Deleting posts = bad. Being able to edit posts for only a few minutes after dropping them is good. Anything that makes people think about the lasting repercussions of what they are doing is a good idea.

I agree. It sucks that when folks leave all their comments go with them. I think the tees should obviously go, and the icon can revert to the default blank (flickr does this I think), but things they may have contributed can be super useful!

Ameeee has gone on an Emptees hiatus. This is disappointing news. Let’s rally to make her come back.

Ameeeeeee come home. It’s not the same without you.

Ameeee’s profile says: Didn’t want to just up and leave and make Matt et al delete the millions of comments and genuine love and appreciation for the tees. But for now Ameeee is on an Emptees hiatus.

There is a fine line between joking and being obnoxious. Some people, you really cant tell if they are being dicks or just joking. So I think people just need to quit taking everything to heart, constructive criticism is good...keep it that way.

The whole thing of the Manticores is fun for people who are legitimately ripping people off like that guy from Chili with the Flickr account. But the thing with JC and " MANTICORES GET HIMMMMMMMMM" is just ridiculous.
