I was browsing around teh internets for inspiration for a couple of shirts I’m working on, and it seems to me that a lot of merch has some sort of variation of huge text + some coloring. I’m not bashing the bands or companies, I’m bashing the whole concept of huge text. Does it bug anyone else?

it’s pretty bad when something like this is a huge trend. when the designer really knows a lot about typography it can turn out pretty sweet.. but when you have every d-bag kid trying to make them they end up looking like a confusing mess.

It’s so grandparents with bad eyesight can tell what bands their grandchildren like.
I think that if something looks cool, then it looks cool, regardless of what stigma may be attached to the style. There are a lot of stupid big text shirts, but there are some cool ones too.
In short... something about a baby with the bath water...

Well big type tees do sell, but it kinda depends on the designer. If you go to West Aspen Merch you’ll see some pretty sweet hand drawn stuff.

A lot of people buy band merch because they like they band(I know,DUH!), so they pretty much just want to show that its a shirt from lets say...Forever The Sickest Kids:
I have seen these shirts everywhere on tons of people.
As a designer, this can be a very easy and fun design to work with. Not to mention you know it will be eaten up by kids. I have definitely been in this trend and its done really well!

For reals. I’m sure it will fade out at some point. Then some other odd trend will show up that you can be tired of.
I think its because of a few things. Yes the money issue comes into play, but also because it’s a trend! They see other bands doing it and of course "monkey see, monkey do." You as designers know that you have bands come to you saying "We want a design like so & so."
Gold Foil...Collages..."Scribbly Design Vomit Pooh Pooh" As Jimmy calls it...they are all trends. All trends and I’m sure most of you have had to do it before. Just the passing of the times.

For people that don’t know the band, that shirt makes absolutely no sense haha. It’s like two sentences combined into one.
Not to mention the huge type thing, but wowee that person is pretending like they partied naked with the band. I’m there are dudes wearing this tee and calling themselves cute.

its boring, but it sells. i think theres getting to be more and more graphic designers out in the world. and by designers, im mainly talking about the ones that work with layout and type all day. so all that stuffs gotta huge market cause they get a boner off font work. some kind of helvetica obsession disease.
