I'm doing album art for some real close friends.. They're on Columbia Records, so I'm sure they have a nice budget. I just don't want to ask for too much or too little. What's a fair price for a six panel design?

Depends how long you think it will take you, really.
I do a lot of album art, so I know roughly how long things take me.
The way I price is
$X amount for the cover
$X per additional panel and each side of the tray
$X for the disc
I know, not super helpful, sorry haha. Make sure you have a good contract.

well, write down how much time you think it will take. Add about 25% more time to that and then apply an hourly rate to it. Multiply hours by rate and that's about what you should be charging.

whats a good average hourly rate?

hey, i just did an album for Gridiron records who my friends band is with...i charged around 2500 and then took 50% off for a "friend" discount....so 1250 plus credits and exposure wasn't too bad. it all really depends on the budget though..find that out and then discount some since it's your friend. might lead to more work too..

fuck that if they "ARE ON COLUMBIA" charge a shit load.

hahaha Good point doublej. Majors often pay waaaaaaay too much for album art, websites, etc. They'll just recoup the cost from royalties.

They pay way too much? Sounds like you're complaining, haha. I think they pay what is fair.
