... sea turtles, no matter what shit goes down they always know the way home.

I’m a strange religious person, like an Atheist with Buddhist influences. I don’t believe in a "god" but I do think that we are born again. And I feel that my outlook on life and the means of events in our lives fit in perfectly with buddhist mentalities.

I’m watching Fools Gold and realizing I wasted my money. I’d rather be enjoying some awesome Taco Bell.

we can’t be civil human beings and talk about our thoughts on religion?

shall we take it to talking about cupcakes and candy then?

my parents never raised me teaching any specific religion, though they do both believe in god and practice their own religions.

i don’t believe in god. they both know that, and for the time being, they’re fine with it. my mother hopes i’ll add religion into my life when i get older but i can’t see it happening.

i don’t mean to insult anyone with this - but here is a quote from george carlin:

Religion easily has the best bullshit story of all time. Think about it. Religion has convinced people that there’s an invisible man…living in the sky. Who watches everything you do every minute of every day. And the invisible man has a list of ten specific things he doesn’t want you to do. And if you do any of these things, he will send you to a special place, of burning and fire and smoke and torture and anguish for you to live forever, and suffer, and burn, and scream, until the end of time. But he loves you. He loves you. He loves you and he needs money.

that mostly sums it up for me.

also i believe that it doesn’t take religion or god to make me a good person ... i am capable of making my own decisions.

however, i think some religions are really fascinating, and i respect others' beliefs as they should respect mine.

I believe it is the right to each person to believe what they wish, God or no God.

And I also don’t see a problem with being open to the possibility of such. Never a problem to keep an open mind.

I believe in God (but not the church), my wife does not believe in either, and we’ve never had a problem with each others beliefs. Ideally this is how it should be with people of all religions but unfortunately it is not.

Amen about Harry Potter! I am re-reading the series as we speak, half way through the Half-Blood Prince. Glad to see there is another Potter dork in the midst.

As for religion, that is a soap box for me. I was raised mormon mostly by my community. My immediate family was never really into the whole religion thing, but I tried to be a good little mormon girl because that’s what’s all my friends believed and I didn’t want to be left out, but there was always a voice in the back of my head that was weary. Once I was old and wise enough to start questioning my beliefs (and realized I wasn’t crazy, just hearing the voice of reason), I decided it just wasn’t for me.

After that, I researched other religions, not looking for a new one, just interested in seeing what other people believe. It was FASCINATING. I came to the conclusion that all religions have a good foundation. Treat everyone with the respect they deserve, Realize that there is something bigger then ourselves at work, And in the end good things happen to good people. It is the extremest that ruin it for the most part. Religions were created to bring comfort to people and to help guide and direct them. People were looking for answers to the rhetorical questions "Who are we?" "Where did we come from?" Where do we go when we die?" and religious books are just documentation of peoples hypotheses of those burning questions. Some people need to be told how to live their lives, how to be good people. Some people can figure it out for themselves. What gets us (by us I mean mankind) in trouble is when people can’t be satisfied with the own personal beliefs and try to push their religion on other people. Just think of how many wars have been fought over or in the name of God.

In the end, it doesn’t matter if you pray everyday or not a day in your life, if you went to church every week or never set foot in a church, as long as you life your life with the best intentions and were true to yourself, good things will happen.

Long story short, I believe in Karma and Respect. And I’m really excited to see what happens (if anything) when we die.
(told ya it was a soap box)

thats pretty admirable connor. being a non-believer i have encountered similar situations in relationships and it was extremely difficult to get past. the fact that you are married, and apparently very happy, is pretty rare. good for you!

Thanks SWH. I guess it stems back to the whole appreciating the other person for who they are and what they believe. There is nothing worse then someone trying to force you into believing what they believe. It would be even worse to try and do that to your own spouse and best friend.
