ok, so im just browsing the web and have to open up ie explorer for a page that firefox couldnt function on and thought nothing more of it...
next thing i know is microsoft defender is telling me i have a trojan (vundo.gen!E/vundo.gen!C/vundo.gen!B etc)
so i take the necessary action to remove them.
so defender comes back an hour later saying that the trojans come back.
so this time i scanned the infected files with mcafee but it says there isnt a problem.
i looked the virus up on the internet and it turns out its just an adware bug but that it also uses up virtual memory (i was using 95% RAM in idle) and it randomly brings up ads on your browser.
however now after me trying almost everything i can think of, the computers bluescreened 4 times resulting in me completely losing audio, windows desktop manager and the aero theme (which was the only thing which made me slightly feel like i was on a mac)...
now that ive found out about regedit and cmd ive tried hunting the rogue files down but cant find them!
all in all im thoroughly pissed off and cant wait to get a mac...
im sure this isnt as bad as half your horror stories, but for someone who has trusted microsoft to some extent for the whole of their computer lives, it comes as abit of a shock (i havent really had any other severe problems).
however it has mostly made me angry at the f*cking hackers who think up this stuff.
but what really tops it off is the fact that i always thought macs didnt really have a distinct advantage, if i had been on a mac then this wouldnt have happened and this day would not have been a waste of my f*cking time...
i dont know what to do...
rant over

the answer to your problem:
get a mac.
dougie said 5 months ago
lol, i was wondering how long it would take for someone to say that!
Randomentity said 5 months ago
yeah I mean, the amount of time saved not fighting viruses and adware makes up for the price tag IMHO.
Sucks dude, you need to boot up on safe mode and clean out the offending file.
hideouscarwreck said 5 months ago
definitely. you will cry tears of joy when you see the difference
dougie said 5 months ago
im just about to delete the offending registrys...
ive done a restore point so i guess im pretty safe :(
Incarnadine said 5 months ago
Firefox was trying to tell you something!
Weird, quite honestly I havent had all of these horrible virus and adware problems on my XP computer. Kinda dumbfounds the guys at the local Genius Bar, hahaha. My dad put Live OneCare on my computer but all it does is slow stuff down.
Thats another thing, get XP, way faster, and more customizable, you can make it look almost perfectly like a mac if you really want to!

i got all transfixed by the aero theme on vista but you can basically get the same thing on xp now, vista has no real bebefits...
brotel said 5 months ago
dude! exact same thing happened to me last week. i finally got everything sorted out.
i resorted to just reformatting.
i tried to go back to a restore point but after an hr it showed up again. my explorer.exe was through the roof! not iexplorer though. it was weird.
yeah just back up everything, reformat and get firefox 3
ez-kun said 5 months ago
fucking virtumondo adware virus! made me re-format 3 times in a week, till i managed to install the antivirus first, then enter the www..
i tried all the deletes/antivirs/antyspy..they are shit, this is a clever bastard.
so. screw mcafee, get NOD, youll love the way it works. then, i hope you do have a separate partition for windows...format it like you mean it. there.
actually takes no time at all fighting viruses, if you are protected and watch your steps..stay away from suspicious sites! and, fuck it, a format/install stuff takes me 1 hour and a half. i would do it once a week, as it saves me the ridiculous amounts of cash apple charges in my country for shitty systems.

i think ive fixed it...
i downloaded spyware doctor for the free demo and scanned my drive, when it found the trojan i tried to delete it but you have to buy the product for it to remove anything!
so i just looked at the details of the trojan, found the registry keys it was under and then used regedit to delete them.
so far so good and i havent had to reformat the drive, having said that, its managed to avoid all my other attempts so theres no reason why it wouldnt be hiding somewhere else...

Are you in education? If not, come to me and Ill get you a good price on a Mac. Fo' Sho'
gkalazy said 5 months ago
the secret to solving this is to stop trying to customize xp soo much with free xp styles on the net
xp is well studied by almost everyone and can be manipulated with a simple program
and i dont trust mcafee too much
ive used it before and everytime i scan i get nothing but gets a lot when i scan with panda antivirus
and with internet explorer it sucks never leave mozilla to firefox
mozilla has been toughened up and can tell u of any threat and even blocks it if necessary
programs on the net have been modified, so if u want xp styles dont download from any source other than the official site of the program, and in this instant xp site and browse to styles
Hope i helped
dougie said 5 months ago
Im on vista, mcafee has been fine so far and i agree about the whole firefox thing, definitely better...
what do you mean if im not in education (cos i am)
Robmcbride said 5 months ago
VISTA?!?!oiugqweoihqeoieqoe
Thats the reason why youre machine went wrong.
Apple give good discounts to people in Education. I work for a shop that sells Mac stuff, but we dont get the same education discount, but we can knock money off.
However, if youre looking to upgrade any mac equipment with RAM.. DEFINITELY come to us, Apple cant touch our prices.

I need RAM. But youre in the UK....
I cant believe anyone hasnt said this, but..... stop looking at whacked out porn sites. That might be your problem.... hehe.
matt901 said 5 months ago
Its clearly down to the porn.
hideouscarwreck said 5 months ago
you will not get anything done with vista, trust me, i was in the exact same position you are in just a few months ago. get a mac asap and like i said, you will ask yourself why you didnt start with a mac in the first place.
volatile v said 5 months ago
I think that the culprit here is Internet Explorer. I think McAfee blows too, personally. Ive been using Norton all my life and I havent had to deal with any shit.
Spybot Search and Destroy and AdAware are your two best friends if you find yourself visiting sites that are putting that stuff on your computer.
Kolby said 5 months ago
If you have not gotten this out.....
Dont use macafee use avg.
Download avg, search and destroy, and unhack me. Run them all.
greens said 5 months ago
woot woot i will never own a pc again
I heart my mac book
Enclothe said 5 months ago
I hate macs and will never own one, so if youre like me the solution is still an overpowered underpriced PC.
You just have to take the proper precautions,
Firefox was a good start, you might also want to install the ad-blocker and the no-script plugins, also theres an IE render tab plugin you can install, so you can look at pages inside IE in a firefox tab. Never have to open IE again.
Also a simple install of AVG antivirus will keep 99% of virus(virii?) at bay.
Incarnadine said 5 months ago
yeah, cause any of us can just plonk down 1-$2000. As Im getting closer to buying an imac, I cant help but wonder if I should just get a much faster, stronger quad core PC for less money...
ez-kun said 5 months ago
more power, less money FTW. after all, its a matter of taste, but less power-more money sounds bad, doesnt it?:P
manos said 5 months ago
Is this gonna turn into an Amiga vs Atari ST flashback dispute?! :)
By the way, all my life Ive used PCs and Macs are fine machines but I love setting my own machine, getting the parts and building it. Same way I used to build my own sound system. Costs are in my control that way and all and all is a way of living for me cause Ive always been into the tech love affair.
Getting a Mac will not answer all your problems and in fact those problems can be avoided easily. It is only natural that the most popular system and machine will get the most attention which evidently means more people trying to "break" it. If Macs were as popular as PCs all Mac owners would be telling others to move over to PCs cause they are "safer".
Incarnadine said 5 months ago
Now the 3.06 Ghz dual core imac sounds like a good deal Im not gonna lie, but you could get a quad core easy for under $2000. But whatever, Im sure Ill be getting a mac soon anyways!
