<body>the only one ive used is a nikon d80 - it takes good pictures, nice and clear, but the user interface is awful. i really dont like nikon UI unless they changed it since i got my camera (i think... december 2007)

i wanna get a sony a900, but its way out of my price range. i have some old minolta lenses that would be compatible.

i heard the canon 40d was really good as well. the UI is better than the nikons IMO.</body>

<body>I would recommend the Canon T1i. Same 15mp sensor as the 50D and same processor (Digic 4) as the 50D and 5D mark II. Also has HD video recording at 720p at 30fps and 1080 at 20fps (20fps is kinda ehhh)

At around 900 bucks its definitely a good buy. If I had money I would upgrade my rebel xt to that, but if I had even more money I'd just get a 5D.

Hope this helps!</body>

things to remember

if you are crazy about autofocus, the nikon d40, d40x, d60 &amp; d5000 only autofocus with nikon afs lenses.

im a fan of the d50 &amp; d80, both of which are reasonably priced for entry level

As far as I know that's kind of standard on DSLRs. That's the way my Canon XS is anyway. The only way I've figured out how to turn it on is to do a custom white balance.

i was merely pointing out that it doesn't have it, live view, although not necessary, is an expected function on today's cameras.
some people have gone out and bought d60's found out it doesn't have it and said they wouldn't have got it if they had known.

Not trying to argue here, but if a person is in the market for a SLR of any kind they should know through simple research live view is not needed / or even used on all but a select few. The new Sony A300's and up have Live View, someone correct me if I am wrong. Only problem I had with the new Sony DSLR's is they did not feel very durable when I was testing them out. Plus the overall feel in my hand just was not comfortable. I went with a simple Nikon D40, and I have yet to be let down.

I haven't been shooting SLRs all that long, but one tip of advice I can give you is try out the camera somewhere before you buy it. If you plan to order it online, go to a store that carries them and ask them to hold it and shoot a few photos if its more than a display model. That way you can get the feel for the camera in your hands and assure yourself you are comfortable with it before you even pay for it. </body>

<body>I have a Cannon XSi. I have had absolutely no problem or complaints with it, but I don't use it as much as I'd like to.

It does have live view. I've almost never turned it on, in fact I don't really even remember how to. It's not exactly elegant to use live view even if you want to.

However, I have used the live view when connected to my laptop. With my XSi, I can plug in my laptop to my camera, compose the shot on my laptop screen, adjust white balance, etc., and then shoot directly from my laptop. This is a handy functionality of live view on a dSLR.</body>

<body>I asked for budget so I could advise you in my opinion.

I use a Leica D-LUX3 and a Nikon D700 both are great cameras but quite pricey.

One Camera I think you should take a look at is the Canon G10&lt;a href="http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&amp;fcategoryid=144&amp;modelid=17624"&gt;CANON G10&lt;/a&gt;</body>

<body>If you want to cut your teeth on Nikon I'd say d80 all the way. You can get them for almost the same price as a d40x, and you can use more lenses with it, it has a better autofocus, etc. Wish I had just bought one to start with.</body>

<body>The DSLR body isn't as important as the glass.
sure it matters...but unless you are doing real specific shoots that require certain specs...it will be overkill.

I shoot with a Canon XSi (450D)...has live view....honestly never bothered to use it....don't know why it's there.

....anyways you are much better off if you can afford save up to get proffesional glass like, Canon L series Glass...or an equivalent.

A Mediocre body with professional lenses will be strides better than a professional body with mediocre glass.</body>

<body>It's all about the glass! All of the cameras above can achieve the same principle quality photos, and pretty much have the same features. (to an extent)

The difference is in what kind of lens you are using on that camera.

50mm, 35mm primes are wonderful lenses to start with, and will teach you how to get really good at depth of field.</body>
