Netflix to eliminate “profile” features

posted 3 months ago by jfinley

So I’m a devoted Netflixer like I’m sure a lot of you are here. Did you get an email saying they were removing profiles?

We will be eliminating Profiles, the feature that allowed you to set up separate DVD Queues under one account. When? Profiles will be eliminated on September 1, 2008. Why? While it may be disappointing to see this feature go away, this change will help us to continue to improve the Netflix website for all our customers.

If that’s so, I think that’s it. I would cancel my account.

Help DIGG this story up to get more attention, so Netflix will realize how this is a terrible idea.

I didn’t even know you could do that. Why would you cancel the subscription just cause they got rid of that one feature? I support boycotting companies that do stuff you don’t agree with but I’ll wait.

Edit:I still don’t k now how to set up different profiles under same account. I feel like a nub.

    Be my friend

My fiance and I have one account, but separate profiles. Which means we have a queue for me and a queue for her. And all my ratings and recommendations are for me, not for both of us.

I get 2 movies at a time and my fiance gets 1. It’s worked great for over 3 years.

Getting rid of this means, families or couples or roommates with more than one queue on their account will be fucked. They won’t even migrate them to new separate accounts or anything. They will simply delete them and they want people to start all over again - which means rating thousands of movies and adding movies to your queue all over again.

It’s one of the best features of Netflix. If you’re just a single person using Netflix, it’s not a big deal. But for people like me who share an account with someone, it blows.

And it’s not like my life revolves around Netflix. I’ve just come to rely on its convenience and ease of discovering new films. It’s just a hobby that Netflix feeds daily.

It’s easily one of the best features on Netflix. My girlfriend, myself, and my roommate share an account and we all have separate queues. It will be a huge pain to deal with if we didn’t have our own profiles. Plus, we all have differing opinions on films, so the ratings would be all jacked up if we were all on one account.

Honestly this doesn’t bother me at all. We’ve been using Netflix for over a year now and I wasn’t even aware of this feature at all. My wife and I almost always watch everything we get from Netflix together so there really isn’t a reason for us to have seperate profiles. If I want something she doesn’t, I just use up one of our 3 choices for something I choose, and vice versa.

Also, having a Roku box allows us to watch any of the instant watch stuff on our TV that’s on our queue and it works out great. We both just add any of the instant watch to the list and watch them whenever we please.

Maybe I’m missing something here, but why would something like this make you want to cancel your account? I understand with roommates, this is probably an important feature to have, but it’s not like Netflix is less effective without the feature.

Nonetheless, I dugg the article for you Fin.

Not bad at all. DVD quality at best using HDMI. But the box is HD ready for when Netflix has those available for instant watch. How well it’s going to buffer HD is beyond me though. For a normal tv show/movie it will buffer for about 20-30 seconds and play fine.

If you have a windows machine and an Xbox360 don’t bother buying a box. There are plugins for the media center which do the exact same thing through your 360. I don’t have a PC and use connect360 to stream to my 360 but it doesn’t have support for Netflix... yet.

No point, they’re eliminating profiles anyway. No sense in building a friendship that will soon be torn apart. *sniff*
