Someone got onto him about the fad of cocky dudes riding fixed gear bikes and he replied that cocky dudes were riding fixed gear bikes in SF a hundred years ago. It's definitely nothing new. It's just how bikes were originally made, velodrome or not. It's like calling vinyl records a fad now.
And honestly everyone I know with a fixed gear bike has a brake and it's the law in the UK.
There are plenty of benefits like better control, lighter bike, and the aesthetics of a simple machine.
Otherwise, like me, they have a single speed and a brake with a freewheel so you can coast. But I have a reversable cog so I might try it fixed and see if I like it.

nice try dude, but this shit is a fad. they got cool because they were thought to be dangerous or whatever and the trend morphed into jean shorts and those stupid hats. kids are always looking for ways to be part of a group, consciously or subconsciously.

eventually the fad will implode. it will get bigger and bigger and it will become (even more) embarrassing to be seen on one and kids will (finally) buck the trend and just ride bikes like they used to. beach cruisers (fuck the world).

Here's mine. But I am mostly into mountain biking.

I got mine for simplicity because I use it to commute to work. I also have to say the fixed gear hub helped my mountain biking. Now I am just mashing on the trail almost non-stop. It's helped fortify my pedaling technique that I then took over into my mountain biking. It's been a great training tool.

But as you can see I don't bike because it's a trend. I EFFIN love riding and get pissed off on days I don't. I also wear a helmet, baggy mountain bike shorts, have lights on my bike, and a front brake.

Riding brakeless is very stupid no matter how skilled you are, it's not a controlled stop nor the most efficient way to stop. Keep your brakeless setup for the velodrome, but oh well natural selection at its finest.

It's true it is very trendy at the momemnt with scene-hopping hipsters. Most of them don't obey or care for traffic laws, it really pisses me off and gives the good cyclists a bad rep.

Some people do single speed for mountain biking, and there are a couple who can do the same uphills as me in their singlespeeds. My mountain bike is geared. But in mountainous places where youre ascending 2000 feet yeah you definitely need gears.

Another reason my fixed gear bike is good is I bomb up parking garages and bridges and it really strengthens my legs.

I do plan to build a single speed mountain bike in the future, but I've got no money at the time.

Here's my mountain bike.

But I have a reversable cog so I might try it fixed and see if I like it.

nice try dude, but this shit is a fad. they got cool because they were thought to be dangerous or whatever and the trend morphed into jean shorts and those stupid hats. kids are always looking for ways to be part of a group, consciously or subconsciously.

eventually the fad will implode. it will get bigger and bigger and it will become (even more) embarrassing to be seen on one and kids will (finally) buck the trend and just ride bikes like they used to. beach cruisers (fuck the world).

now that is something i could get behind! hah.

hahahaha. I forgot about the little hats and shorts, you're totally right. I'm used to riding BMX though so gears seem overkill to me. Single speed all the way. I like the minimalism of single speed bikes and I sure as shit don't ride anywhere requiring gear changes.

[edit] That's also why fixed gears themselves (not the movement but the hardware) aren't that bad because jesus christ it's expensive as hell to repair geared bikes, they weigh more and cost more to buy.

I love riding a Fixed Gear; I started riding about 3years ago, it now feels bizarre riding a bike with a freewheel. Its amazing the amount you coast when your riding a freewheel bike. I thought Fixies were nuts until I tried my friends and now I’m hooked, I wouldn’t ride anything else on the road.

You can knock all the hipsters who are jumping on the Fixed Gear bandwagon for fashion reasons, but pro-cyclists and enthusiasts have been riding Fixed Gear for off-season training to improve their cadence (revolutions of the crank per minute) since bikes were invented. It’s not a new thing its just found a new audience good or dad.

If you’re into bikes and haven’t tried to ride a Fixie give it a go for 1/2 hour and you will love it :)

Oz. said: A bike built for racing in a velodrome race track, then made popular in the street by bicycle messengers. It's got one speed and no bearing for coasting and no breaks. Get on one and you'll never go back. You've just got to try it to understand why it's fun, happened to me a few years ago and now i'm addicted to cycling.

M5Froth said:
ShirtFight.com said: Maybe I'm old and out of touch...but what's the draw or benefit of a fixed gear bike?

For reals....what the fuck is a fixie?

My favorite is an interview with Mike Giant at FecalFace.com

Kevin Doom said:
skull with hair said: death to this boring shit.

Just wait until they come out with finger fixed gears.

now that is something i could get behind! hah.

Then why do anything? "everything's a cycle in the world, who cares"

no pun intended!
