Thanks dude! I like to check out a lot of magazines. Design, photography, technology, or whatever type of magazine that interests me at the time. I like looking at the advertisements, they have the best type treatments.

I’ll be honest, most of the time I just pick a basic font to start off with, trace it with the wacom to get that handwritten look and just add to it subtle details that make it it’s own.

oh what was the name of that kids book with all the animals at a party or something and it was a-z and a lot of alliteration in it. The illustrations were really neat. ooo curse my drug wounded memory.

Thanks for the advice connor! yea i was going through some magazines at barnes and noble the other day and found this really cool font in an actual typography magazine. totally lost the magazine and couldnt find, and then a week later i saw the exact same font in an ad on a different magazine. haha thats when it hit me! so what font site would you recommend? i found dafont.com to be pretty good but ive never really found a better one..

dafont is a good one, also 1001fonts.com as well. If you want some really good fonts though, you have to dish out the dough!

    My favs come from:
    Ths - http://ths.nu/ths.php?p3=nav_typefaces
    Misprinted Type - http://misprintedtype.com/v3/fonts.php
    Veer - http://www.veer.com/products/type/

    check out http://www.typophile.com/
to get your type nerd on. seriously. there are some other websites that are all about typography and just hardcore type nerds discussing the pro’s and con’s of sans vs slab serif fonts and shit. it’s scary.

Wow thanks for the mention but the only type i can do well is my calligraphy. I have ways to go to truly understand typography as a science. I really like typography more as an artform. So I really dig these guys:

    THS/Misprinted Type
Oded Ezer -http://www.odedezer.com/ some highly experimental shit
Alex Trochut -http://www.alextrochut.com/ -- One of the best typographers right now
Si Scott - http://www.siscottstudio.com/ - totally unique style and ripped often
and of course Sagmeister, the master!

You should definitely check out who i consider to be one of the kings of type--David Carson. He has a few books out that show off his style. He’s been around for ages and still produces work that blows modern design out of the water. I own one of his books, The End Of Print and love it.

something I’ve found that’s helped me a TON with doing custom typography is to type out what I want in a simple font, kern it super close, then create completely custom typo on top of it. I use the original font just for spacing and layout, I don’t use any of it in the typo, it was hard to get used to doing it that way, but I’ve found I can line stuff up a ton better that way.
