Basically, Google wants illustrations for people to pick for their google home pages, but they're only offering exposure.

The saddest part is they have no shortage of Illustrators willing to sell their soul.

“You’d think that if anyone can afford to pay artists and designers it would be a company that is making millions of dollars,” Mr. Ciardiello said in an interview.

In the first quarter of this year alone, Google reported profits of $1.42 billion, an increase of 8 percent over the same period last year.

indeed, now these guys need to be educated.

Yeah, I mean.. When I imagine getting larger accounts, I imagine them coming with bigger paychecks, you know?

It's hard to blame it on the companies who are asking for work for free, when Illustrators are so quick to roll over on ethics and hand over hard work in exchange for nothing but air. It scares me, as a person who wants to be able to feed my family in the future through illustration, to watch the skill be made laughable.

apparently google has a pretty high opinion of themselves. I remember a thread on the root once where an applicant for a graphic design position at google had to go through a gauntlet of design challenges before they even got an interview. Basically creating icons and the like for free. The only payment was just further consideration. Kind of a different situation but not really.

I interviewed at Google a few years back for a Project Manager position, and had to go through a gauntlet of interviews...and let me tell you, they have a HIGH opinion of themselves (and that's putting it in a nice way).

the chances of google taking artwork from a small rookie artist is quite slim.
if google accepts work from a bigtime artist, that individual should be paid.
google is flippin wealthy, so paying shouldn't be a problem.

True, but wont most "big artists" think that google should pay and therefore not submit work?
And any smalltime rookie, just trying to enter the business can get some decent (or indecent) exposure for free, just by submitting a peice of art?

I see from both sides though, and this campaign is not likely to make it off the ground.

Maybe google will also change their shit and pay, or hold a contest involving a cash prize.

Either way, I wouldn't submit anything until i see what kind of exposure google will give.
they could have a Terms Of Agreement stating that they completely own the peice of art just for simply submitting it.

it's not like you are giving away some random unused artwork to a small website because that maybe will bring some more hits to your portfolio... it's about giving free work to a multi million company like google...

i'm sure they pay all their employees... not just go like "you work here for free because we are so cool and google will look great on your cv"... if they pay all their employees why they would not pay for illustrations?

just pointed out they're ahead of Google in the game

Google is not doing user skins, it's doing special artist skins. Even if it was, what does this bring to the discussion?

I said CLEARLY, earlier on, that i would not submit my art because i dont like the terms.

I'm fairly certain they have MANY individuals who would kill for this chance, which allows them to do it.

I agree where they should offer a cash prize, and maybe this idea is just that, an idea.

and Idea: an INKEMPLETE thought process. More will likely be added onto it, and more will likely be taken off.

its all just how the world works, if you dont think something is fair, don't do it.

earlier someone said i'm in lamemans terms a "newb". and maybe i should stick around.

No, you keep trying to act like it's okay and that's just how the world is. It's not. If you called up a mechanic and told them to fix your car, and you would repay them by telling people how good a job they did, they'd laugh in your face.

"Granting a prize" is just as bad. Take your car to all of the mechanics in the area and tell them whoever does the best job will get paid, cuz you're having a jolly contest.

This is a real career, and people who illustrate have real bills to pay just like everyone else. It's not okay, it's not "just how it is" and it'll only get worse if we don't stand up for ourselves and make a point that our skills are as valuable as everyone elses.

exactly.
i am only sixteen and i live with my family.
my family is not wealthy, i have been living in basements, and tiny apartments my whole life.
that extra cash can really help everyone out.
it'd be a waste to work for google and not get paid.
i am wasting my time, i am wasting my effort, and i am not getting much in return.
i would do a lot better with NO exposure at all, and some cash.
having google in my portfolio/resume is cool with me.

Ever had someone say get a real job. That really bugs me.
If it were really that easy then why not just do it yourself?
As with all work, professionals do a better job, and getting compensated is not unheard of.
It saddens me that when creatives ask for money it's a huge deal.
We shouldn't have to ask. At my day job I get a paycheck, and perks. With the arts, I'm lucky to get a paycheck. Just be thankful, I'm not asking for dental, and a 401k on top of it.

“We don’t feel comfortable releasing the names of artists who are participating in the project before it launches,” stated the company

So they are working for exposure and google isn't exposing. That is a fist full of shit.

I don't know if you're inkemplete, or someone who doesn't like inkemplete, or really just a slow person. Anyway..

It's not just how life is, period. You have missed the entire point of this being posted. This is already a real career, and it is being trivialized by people treating it like a fucking gameshow, or even less. The only way for this to change is for people involved to stand up for themselves, and making an example of one of the biggest companies out there is a good way to gain ground for the cause.

So, I don't care if you say I'm right. I will not be agreeing with your "that's just how it is" clause. Ever.

When someone molests a little girl, I don't go "well that's fucked up, but that's just how the world is." I rally to have that bastard sent to jail. When somebody molests my profession, I have the same reaction. I find your spineless opinion offensive.

I think you missed the part where you actually have to pay all the bills, and if you can't come up with the money you lose the place you live.

I mean, why don't you just give all your SC shirts away, it would be great exposure to get them on people? - Get off your high horse.

Go to your walmart job for free, people seeing you working there will let them know you are a hard worker and they will give you lots of well-paying jobs. - Get off your high horse.

Go to work tomorrow and have your boss tell you that your check is only going to be half of what it was before, because other people are willing to do it for exposure. Pay your bills then. - Get off your high horse.

The problem is...google and othe major companies get to do this, it devalues the work of all of us, kids living at home or guys that have to make a living.
I'm sure that if at some point you want to pursue design as a career (which you can do, because you are very talented) it would suck ass to get lowballed on the account of other doing it for free or for exposure.

It's happened to me before, I got screwed over on doing something for Greedy Genius because somebody wanted to do it for free. I was pissed, but I moved on, I know there is always going to be somebody out there that would rather pay for quality than get shit for free.

Dang.. Man. These threads always get people going but I think they are very important and informative to those that don't know what it's like.

A lot of people will never really know about priorities until like what Heavy Prints said you really have all this to rely on. I used to do free lance for 3 merchandise companies and man sometimes I would do so much spec work it was not even funny and my checks were always late so my job as a video game tester, game store associate and Closet World Customer Service Representative had to really come through. I finally decided to get a steady paying job in design and even having one of those is difficult.

I work for a corporate multi-level marketing company. I get paid 40,000 a year and have 2 kids to feed, 2 car payments, groceries, utilities, diapers etc. This is not enough to maintain my household. It's just not. So side work is definitely a must and a blessing for me.

I understand where everybody is coming from but i have to hand it to these dudes that do this for a living because it is extremely hard when everybody thinks that we just LOVE DRAWING SO FUCKING MUCH that we do it for free or that we wouldn't mind the exposure. Or it's so easy to come up with web sites so making a web site for someone will give us exposure BECAUSE THEIR BUSINESS HAS SOOOOO MANY CLIENTS BLAH BLAH.. Fuck that!

Everyone just thinks that artists are these free thinking people that don't care about money and that life is just a canvas for us but that shit is not true. We live in a 2 income household minimum world and have our own personal obligations, hopes & dreams.

Much respect to the guys supporting their households and helping their families. Being humble will definitely help you guys when your on your own and it will definitely help you appreciate everything so much more.

What Google is doing is awful and I wish they would really reconsider there contest.
I love seeing the Dr. Suess Google theme but would feel awful to know that Dr. Suess's foundation didn't get anything from that or that the artist just did it for exposure.

I did not ask for your name. You are wrong, ignorant and absolutely out of place. You can go back to your cave now.

And by saying that you are a hipocrit.

The word you are trying to use is actually hypocrite, sweetheart. I did not say a single thing that would contradict my beliefs or feelings. You should stay in school, and probably stay after as well, for extra help.

Im sorry English isnt my first language.
the most eltiest self loving thing to do is correct grammar over the interwebs.

The pros would call this activity "feeding the sharks", it encourages unhealthy client expectations, and more or less hurts, everyone. If a client sees someone working for free for Google they are going to think that person will work for free for them as well. Or that it's an acceptable practice to use young talent, and bypass paying a professional. Freelancers and clients need to have a little respect for each other, it just get's old having to fight for a paycheck when in every other job it's a given.

If I were a client and I saw a guy or gal doing free work, I would want to hire them under the same conditions, not say let's get that free google guy on board for own however much big budget project. The artist is getting exposed as cheap sauce, not awesome sauce.

Emptees needs a spell-check ASAP!

Your entrance onto this website was most definitely not a pleasant one. I highly suggest that you listen and learn before you speak out. There are many respectful/respectable artists on this website who have a lot of insight to offer. I do acknowledge your right to freedom of speech and to your own opinion, however I question the validity and reason behind it.

Are you an artist? Do you have any experience in the field of graphic arts? This is why I was curious as to who you are.

You asked me: "Am I right to assume you haven't learned that in school yet?" You are wrong in your assumption and ignorant to take it upon yourself to make such a statement. Your actions have clearly proved this.

I jsut think the point of the post is to inflict some sort of standing up for artists.. and hoping artists have enough respect for themselves to stand up for what is right...
obviously there are some that don't care.. obviously those arent the ones that are supporting themselves and families soley on design and illustration..

sure to each their own.. but what google is doign is pretty much bullshit.. though some won't know enough about it to not submit their art... I am sure some very talented artists will submit their art and get excepted.... they don't know any better about the industry and probably aren't making a living off it ... though that being said... Google excepting a talented artists work may have an effect on other big companies... with that in mind thinking " hey I can get free art and claim they are getting exposure while I am still profiting greatly! Artists do what they do cuz they love it and not for money, so it is ok"

I think this thread was in hopes that artists would maybe be like minded and fight against it.. it is useless to keep arguing about it

ok so basically:

- google is being a tardclan.
- artists want to get paid for their hard work.
- exposure is losing its meaning.

also, i think if google did successfully provide a decent amount of exposure for an artist, it wouldn't really matter that much unless you're applying for a high end job. otherwise, artists who work for clothinglines/bands can't really benefit because the client (google) isn't their initial target audience.

I wouldn't say that exposure is losing its meaning. Being an artist is a career, like being a doctor or a school teacher. You need to get paid in order to survive. Surely, exposure can lead to receiving many new clients, but its not a promise.

If art is a hobby for you and you don't plan on living off of it, then I'm sure that what Google is doing is ideal. So yes, in the eyes of us artists who do this for a living, Google is being a major tardclan.

i think I have finally started to understand how genres of art works... such as.. commercialized illustration and design are the main things that you AREN'T doing something for yourselves.. you are working for someone .. therefore it is work worth to get paid. In money and exposure.. which exposure typically will come hand in hand when you sell a design to someone commercial who is making money off your art. they plan on having many people see it.. that shit will be in your portfolio, then you got some credibility as a desiger.

Fine art graffiti are more a long the lines of getting your shit out there anyway... shit im not giving a painting away for free... but artists are doing graffiti on sides of walls for free. out in public.. so they are being exposed for free.. maybe in hopes of making money off of it? who knows what their goals are.. fine art oil paintings sculptures etc... you are trying to show that shit off all the time.. gallery shows.. internet.. you aren't gonan give it away for free though ... then again that is a genre of art where someone isn't making bank off your talent..
i do both... fien art and commercial design... I would totally donate some paintings for exposure.. and fund raising for art communities or charities.. I will go out and do a mural on a wall if someone says it is cool, because , you dont get that oppurtunity too much anyway, it is awesome to spread some culture in your town .. (unless someone is directing me on what shit should be) I'll go ahead and crack that shit out.

anyway.. I don't know where I was going with this post..

I think where I was gettign at was that... when people or "clients" get in that mideset.. "artists are only doing this cuz they love it" I think that kind of mindset can really only pretain to an artist who is doign art for themselves and not for a "client" who is going to be making bank off them..

( this may not make much sense, but I had been thinking about all these things lately.. since I am pretty new to design/clients/commercial art I am tryign to figure out how each 'genre' of art works)

"Business art is the step that comes after Art. I started as a commercial artist, and I want to finish as a business artist."

" Making money is art and working is art and good business is the best art."

"Why do people think artists are special? It's just another job."

Matt Rupp said:
Killer Napkins said: i think I have finally started to understand how genres of art works... such as.. commercialized illustration and design are the main things that you AREN'T doing something for yourselves.. you are working for someone .. therefore it is work worth to get paid.

Exactly. I have his book, The Philosophy of Andy Warhol, and its really interesting. He says a lot of things that would make you want to rethink what art is and what it means to be an artist.

stopped by the Gap the other day with the missus and noticed they had a bunch of "designer" tees on sale. the neck print had the artist's name and some slogan like, "helping to stop AIDS in Africa," or some such thing. right below that was "Made In Peru."

maybe i'm a little fucked up but if you're an artist contributing to Gap in order create AIDS awareness, shouldn't you also not sell your soul and have your shit printed on sweatshop t-shirts? and no, I don't buy my clothes from Gap....the gf wanted to go there.
