So the more and more I have delved into fashion, and the ins and outs of producing a QUALITY mens label, the more Im realizing that staying in Atlanta is going to make it close to impossible to be productive with it. So, after talking to a few guys who own succesful companies in both, I've started to come around to moving to LA or NY. Let me just say, that, unless there is some astronomical oppurtunity in NY (i.e working for a big company, or getting a sweet gig out there in the meantime) I really dont like NY that much. People seem to be pissed all the time, and I need some positive people to keep my brand positive. So LA is the place that im most keen on moving to, (and I was born there, so it seems fitting), but I have never been far from friends or family, and Im not quite sure how things work out there. So I would most likely be looking for a job somewhere to support myself util ES picked up fully. So that being said, any tips? Suggestions? Things that are good to know before moving? Im open to all of it. Thanks again.

In my opinion, if you want the city that has the better fashion go to NY. I think their fashion is way more superior and it's always changing. Idk California's fashion always seems to be kind of dated. But if I were in the same situation as you are, I'd probably end up moving to California since it's closer. Both places are really awesome though.

Moving into a new local scene is tough if you don't know peeps already. If you come to LA to do fashion you've got to be right in west hollywood and just force yourself to get into everything. but you can do it! make it happen man! Try hard to hook up with the peeps running things here that you want to be associated with BEFORE you even get here. Then when you get here you can hit the ground running. i dunno, just spouting off from my experience.

Yea I definitely agree, I've spent the last 3 months just making connections of all the people who run things that I admire, and it seems that there is more in Cali than NY. I know Andrew, the mind behind 3Sixteen clothing, but besides that, not a soul. But in Cali, I know at least 7 or 8 people, though I cant say that Im on a good enough relationship with any of them yet to really get in there and make moves. My plan is to network away until I can convince someone that im the shit and give me an internship or job with them, but well see how things go.

Haha, yea, im sorry, I didnt mean to stereotype. Last time I was in NY, I was on a train 3 times, and all 3 times, someone, very loudly and obnoxiously asked if I thought they were a "Sucker". This is a strong possibility. It could also have to do with the fact that I didnt see much of it, so perhaps I am missing out on the nice parts of NY.

That's not just New York. It's different in the south, people are a lot friendlier and talk more to each other. People don't really talk to each other too much, (depending obviously) especially in Boston, and even in smaller cities in the Northeast. It was super weird when I moved from Boston to Philadelphia (I know, not the South) since everyone is all "oh hai how are you," took a little getting used to but it's really nice. And I live in a hood-ish area by comparison, and everyone is still super nice besides the gangs of 13 year old black girls who call me cracker

Im glad someone else realizes that there is indeed a difference in the friendliness of people in these places. And dont take it personal about the 13 year old black girls calling you a cracker. They are mad because they know that one day, they are going to date a black man, and they will get on his last nerve by doing something like attempting to light his XBOX 360 on fire, and he will break up with her, and then the lovely ex will see him later at a mall with a white girl under his arm and a smile on his face. Maybe not you per se, but some white girl. I know this for a fact, as without this hard fact, I would never have been born. Go Zebra's!

I was mainly just looking to intern for a brand for a while to pick up valuable tips, tricks, stuff like that. It would more than likely only be a temporary move until I got the knowledge I needed to move to Atlanta and do it big here.

and there is nothing like living close to a California Beach
I love it here I think its a great place to live but one thing

Traffic.

Other than that It really depends what you want to do I'm starting up a street/skateboard brand something like the Hundreds, LRG, and Active and LA is perfect for that kind of stuff this place is crawling with skaters and people who wear that kind of style there are plenty of shops out here that would be prefect to have a street wear band in them
and there is plenty of inspiration put here

I dunno maybe you should ask jimiyo what it was like moving to LA and what Opportunity's are out here and how dose it help some one in the design business

Not really. I legit got called a cracker last night by a bunch of 13 year old black girls when I was sitting on my stoop with a bunch of friends drinkin beer. I'm definitely and unmistakably a minority in my neighborhood and a lot of people are into making you feel like one.
I live in Jersey and I'm about 15 minutes from the Lincoln Tunnel to get into NY and I love the City. I've taken the trains multiple times since I was in high school, but driving in can be a bitch. The people just have more of a cocky attitude towards the rest of the nation, but they're not always pissed. I have friends in the Bronx that for some reason have to say hello to everyone, I don't know why, I think he's just a friendly talkative person.

As for art, I think New York is great. It's very mutlicultured and has many galleries, museums, etc to view. The fashion district is cool and I used to work with a company who's client had quite the effect in the fashion district. Brooklyn is definitely a strong art area, although I don't like bk, for some reason. I think it's because I don't want to make the hike.

As for L.A. I recently went there about 3 months ago for inspiration and to get away from some personal things. I must say I do like the fashion and it's definitely different from the east coast. I wanted to go to club with a certain look and my friend told me people would've looked at me weird, because that's not how L.A. does it. Either way I could've gotten away with it, but their style is different. Just looking at the everyday where I like it, but that's because I'm used to seeing what people wear over here. Being in L.A. has me working a design for my soon to be launched line, but being from the tristate area I have a lot of inspiration as well.

The weather can be a factor as well since over here we have the four seasons while in L.A. it's warm all year round.
Oh there's dumb people and racists everywhere, so that's not going to change.

Haha, yea, im sorry, I didnt mean to stereotype. Last time I was in NY, I was on a train 3 times, and all 3 times, someone, very loudly and obnoxiously asked if I thought they were a "Sucker". It took everything in me not to respond, "No Sir, I think your a Blow Pop." But along with that and a few other areas, it just really kind of put me off, Ive lived in Atlanta most of my life, here, when we see people on the road, we give a pleasant nod. In NY, you do that and apparently your a escaped convict. I dunno, just what ive seen...</blockquote>

I think you have a very poor understanding of NY.</blockquote>

This is a strong possibility. It could also have to do with the fact that I didnt see much of it, so perhaps I am missing out on the nice parts of NY.</blockquote>

Saying things like everyone in NY are assholes is like saying everyone from the south is stupid. Neither are true.

I've been to LA once, and to New York (mainly Manhattan though, I'm not sure which borough you're speaking of exactly) multiple times and I much prefer the overall atmosphere and art vibe of NYC to the honestly dirty feel I got from LA. Also, I have not experienced the hostility you have described in NYC. I live in North Carolina and I can confidently say that the people in NYC were not much different manner-wise than the people I encounter on an everyday basis.

If familiarity is what you want, then obviously you should go to LA. But it would take a lot of convincing to have me live there. How about San Diego?

Not really. I legit got called a cracker last night by a bunch of 13 year old black girls when I was sitting on my stoop with a bunch of friends drinkin beer. I'm definitely and unmistakably a minority in my neighborhood and a lot of people are into making you feel like one.
I'm from Los Angeles and have had my shirt line for 2 years now. When I first started my line I wanted to invest everything in to it. My money, time and design. My money of course went into printing but my time went into a real risk for me. I decided to leave my 17.00 per hour job and take a new 9.00 an hour job at American Apparel to learn about the industry. It was really cool on one side but really terrible on another. The good was that I got to see the people making shirts from a big roll of fabric to a finished sewn product. I also learned a lot about ordering, pricing and how not to treat my customers.

The bad was seeing and working with a bunch of divas. Both guys and girls that thought their shit didn't stink and just got caught up in this terrible fashion environment. My inspiration started leaving me depressed because it just seemed like the people who I aspired to be like and reach on a professional status were just in to it for the wrong reasons.

My point in all this is that it doesn't really matter where you are. Your inspiration will come from all angles that makes up who you are and where your heart is. But on a professional level L.A. is cool for the following.

It's an industrial town that is full of manufacturers from garments, labels, printing services and has a grip of distributors, mom and pop retail shops/boutiques and more...

Their is a lot of opportunity in Design in Los Angeles/Orange County

People are very approachable especially when your an artist or have a brand. If your wearing a cool shirt and are out in public 9 out of 10 times somebody, somewhere will ask you where you got your shirt and I have found it to be a very cool way to tell someone about your brand.

Trust me man.. I live in Atlanta now and your right, this place is not really for fashion or a good place to start a line. The only place there is boutiques is Little Five points and Wish is the only one worth anything. There is hardly any events or opportunities to get your brand out there here unless your well established and know tons of people and I just feel in Los Angeles there is tons of things you can do effortlessly to establish yourself.

The Linty Fresh brand is from Marrietta, GA but I think he's been more successful online than in the city. Who knows maybe I'm wrong.

Email me sometime man
It hasn't been a good move being in Atlanta for me & for my brand.

There is hardly any events or opportunities to get your brand out there here unless your well established and know tons of people </blockquote>

So true! When I visited ATL people were not knowledgeable about tees and streetwear like we are in NY or LA. There is virtually ZERO market for streetwear in ATL. But I do feel that will change in about 5 years or so... or maybe longer!

Haha Yeah man! I constantly hear about how Atlanta is this great city from the Locals but it's just not that great man. You can do this town in 2 days. The fashion aspect, art culture, and design is just on an ultimate lower level than L.A. and New York. The market is terrible for street wear and like I said there is only 1 cool boutique in this entire city, WISH.

Hopefully your right and it will change in 5 years but I also hope I won't be here to see it. I just think at the end of the day Atlanta is just a city surrounded by the South and people just don't want to come here.

Sad but true :)

I don't think it's necessary to move anywhere. With the power of the internet, you can run an empire from a comfy chair. It would be a good idea to have some face time, but that would be a business trip, not a full move. I will say that you are one savvy dude, and are going to do quite well, your gut got you into this and seems to be working pretty well for you. I wish you all the best.

lol, yea, but I cant be racist as I am biracial (my mom is white my dad is black), so i cant be biased and am free to say whatever I see fit on either race since I am both.</blockquote>

I respectfully disagree.</blockquote>

hella. you can be racist even if youre half black. to say you cant makes no sense at all.</blockquote>

Well I like to think that I am a level headed bi racial person, and I have had just about equal exposure to both, so I don't see any racism on my front. But your entitled to your opinions, it was mainly just made in jest.</blockquote>

i didnt think what you originally said was racist, i only thought the comment about you not being able to be racist because you are biracial was incorrect.
