I’ll say this, it was not an easy print to do. The entire DBH team works hard on every shirt we print. This one was definitely tough, but we enjoyed the challenge. Our seps guy is amazing and so is production. I was amazed at the way the colors turned out so I snapped a few extra pics to show it off. Great job to the artist JFinley.
Hello everyone wanted to say congrats to Jeff, our separator Dans head exploded in a mass of blood and carnage when dealing with this colorful masterpiece of goodness. We took lots of photos, I think we ended up using 10 jumbo screens and took us around 7 samples or so to get the colors and the application correct. so, Jeff whats the next challenge? we are ready!

Do very many of the winning artists separate their own designs or do you guys usually have to take care of that?
The first sample we did was - very not so good - it was a suck. So the beatings continued until the printing improved! Dan the separator (does anyone else find that hard to spell?) has some real secret ways in how he does his color works - he closes the door and shuts the blind and if you try to go in large objects are thrown at your head. He even has a separator method patent pending and his last assistant was found stuff in the dryer for trying to poach his recipe for success.
I went and opened a flickr account and uploaded all of the images - Tom and I were going to do a little write up tomorrow but the pics pretty much map it out.
Im sure you all have your hands full... but youve shown how competent you are at printing almost anything, and if you ever decided to go into that in addition to DBH, Im sure youd have clients lining up in an instant!
MasterControl said:

We do it all in house - some artists give us a nice layered illustrator file with each color separated - others a super high res tiff or psd file - doesnt really matter to us - we do all the separating, sampling, production, finishing - everything right here in our building in nice sunny Irvine, California, so we have full control
However we receive the final art file is how art is going to be printed - for example in Bold is Beautiful the art file we got from the birthday boy was a little different from the original sub- the red ribbon backgrounds were not as intricate along with some subtle color changes - we see changes to the final art quite a bit actually now that I think of it - We welcome collaborating with the artist on printing styles and ideas in regards to colors adn techniques.
We want artists to be artists - not just whitty, one liner illustrators (although we do appreciate plucky comic relief). We want to push the limits of screen printing (Bold is Beautiful is a good example of a color challenge) - now if you really want to throw us for a loop - challenge us just mix together everything crazy and hard - throw in an all over belt print, with embroidery of the ribbons, some flock, some cut and sew and the back for letters, add in a metalic ink and some type of all over garment dye and we have ourselves a real challenge (and possibly the ugliest t-shirt in the universe) - granted we may have to sell the shirt for $50 to cover the costs - but, be an artist first and foremost - worry about how to print it later.
Joe said: Im sure you all have your hands full... but youve shown how competent you are at printing almost anything, and if you ever decided to go into that in addition to DBH, Im sure youd have clients lining up in an instant!
Joe we love your blog BTW - we really need to get on creating a forum on DBH - this is very fun (BTW - I LOVE whoever coded this forum - very cool stuff). If we get a spare moment then we will just print more DBH tees - we have received over 6,00 pieces of art in the running for Shirt of the Day - over 160 artists have won on DBH so far (and we reject quite a bit of art too which is not up to standard). So we are looking for other ways to push out more shirts for more artists (spread the love).
Yeah, I figured you were up to your ears in tees to print just for DBH! I would be pretty excited if you started doing a 'Two for Tuesday' or something...
Marc is absolutely right. "Be an artist first and foremost" Let us worry about how and if it can be printed.
Were just simple country folk with big dreams, wild imaginations and glazed over eyes from getting this one as close to JFinleys original artwork as possible.
and we reject quite a bit of art too which is not up to standard.
i guess my shit isnt up to standard, because youve rejected what i submitted.
What design did you submit? post a link and I will tell you why - we are actually fairly liberal with what goes through - we only reject if the subject matter is totally offensive, being used or entered into another contest or if the art files themselves are unusable (corrupt .jpg file or something weird). What is lame is when we reject designs you only get an automated message which cites a bunch of different reasons. for example if you submitted this tee http://emptees.com/tees/730-rolling-bones then yes, we would have rejected it - all your other work is really really good, so I am a little bothered why you got rejected (assuming it was not phalic, mammorial, or otherwise related to the parts which are private)
By standard - I mean the basic standards we have in place (no nudity, racially offensive stuff, cuss words, dead babies) - I did not mean up to design standard - design and art is completely subjective (IMO) so who are we to say whether a design is "good" or not - thats what the communities job is

hey marc, thanks for responding so quickly. this is the design i submitted...
i dont feel that it is "totally offensive" but i guess that is up for you guys to decide. im a little curious as to if this counts as nudity because its a cartoon, but im assuming this is why. i cant really be mad if that is your policy but i actually didnt even receive the automated message telling me it was rejected so i never knew what to think (yes i checked my junk mail).
regardless i think you guys are rad and if that is the case i will see what shit i have that is acceptable and maybe resubmit. holler.
LOL - thats funny! - I agree there are MUCH more offensive things then hamburger boobs - however, I can confirm, this would have been rejected due to the nipples (and the cream sauce doesnt help your case either) - sorry man (for what its worth I think some of your other work is WAY better and would do better on a tee).
Also, sorry about not getting the email, we will check on that (we have had other people tell us the same thing, so your not going crazy).
good luck in the future, Im sure the emptees crowd will throw a few votes your way for whatever you submit in the future!
Man. DBH is like. Awesome. That flickr was fun to look through, makes me feel slightly/severely retarded when it comes to printing as Ive only ever done real simple 2 colors in my basement on a drafting table
