Hey I want to replace the rack tom and floor tom on my drum kit. Not sure if I should buy new or used or what brand to get. I'm sort of a noob at this.

I know I probably cannot match the color of my kit, so what do you drummers do when replacing some of your drums? Do you paint it to match?

Anyone have anything to sell/trade me?

go with a custom kit man!
there are tons of companies that make custom pieces for kits and may actually be able to match the color of your kit.

i think darkhorse may be one?

i am not that familiar with drums but i do know tons of bands get custom paint jobs on kits.

Yeah, it just costs a lot of money. SJC drums does custom kits to, and it's be amazing to get one from them. I don't have the cash to spend on it though. I'd gladly do a trade for it if any one wanted to take me on it.

Jeff, I have an SJC kit that was custom built for me in 2007. I am getting rid of a 10x12 (depth x width) if you're interested. I never gig with that rack tom. I highly, highly recommend SJC. Mike is my buddy and I deal specifically with him, but either he or Bryan are extremely helpful

Yeah I'll hit up Mike again (he's a past client of ours actually) and see if we could work out a trade.

Can you send me an email to jeff at gomedia.us and maybe some pics of the tom and what you would want for it? Might be interested, just looking at my options.

Purchasing shells separately gets tricky and often times, expensive. If I remember correctly, you have a PDP kit? Solid brand, although, they like to discontinue things.

I don't think, financially, a custom kit is the way to go.

Here's what I found for separate shells on Musician's Friend:

Mounted Toms

Floor Toms

I would look into purchasing a mid level kit, nothing fancy. Honestly, I feel like that's PDP's strong suit... super solid, great sounding, mid levels.

Check those out here.

Hopefully, this helps Jeff!

Ha, no but for real I might check Craigslist and find some stuff. You can either paint it to match or leave it be. I actually like the Mad Max looking kit when things don't match up but it sounds great.

Thanks, yeah I've got a PDP kit, I got it for $400 bucks used about 3 years ago and I'm still playing on the same snare/toms/kick. I've updated all the cymbals since then though.

I could probably just get a new shell kit. That's the toms and bass drum and the appropriate hardware to take home and start playing? It comes with heads, lugs, etc right?

Exactly. Shell kits have the shells, lugs, tension rods, stock heads, etc. Just no cymbals/hardware.

I think it's a good move.
