'Wandering Whale' project help!!! *updated..

posted 2 months ago by AndrewOliv

normally I dont post web projects for advice and crits but its always different when your working on your own shit. Especially when you tend to nit-pick the smallest details and it drives you nuts!

so here is so far. its sans a logo which I would love some idea's on too!! (just typography, 1color whale etc.)

Wandering Whale Site Template

so lets hear it.. the good, and the bad.

**lastest version... completely different. it is just a 'splash' type page that will jsut contain some variation of a mission statement.
let me know what you think.

the black is looking a little heavy with the light blues. maybe try a dark blue instead of black?

Alright start, but you have to treat it like any other design project. You've got to think about the negative space, which is currently swallowing your main content. The header could be tighter you don't need like 250px of whale tail. I also find it kind of odd that you used a gradient on the 'coming soon' part because that doesn't match the style of the rest of the site. I usually go through so many variations of a website before I am happy.

what dawson said. The big thing for me is that you have to watch your weights. If you close your eyes for a few seconds and open them where does your eye go, where does it go next. For me its the 'debut' section in the middle right, then it bounces to the left, then back to the right and so forth. Work on your directional flow so that you eye starts at the top and works its way down the page.

The biggest thing about web design is that you can't expect people to spot things. You always want to guide people to the different aspects of your site so that way they dont miss anything.

Hope that helps, great start for sure.

by swallowing my main content? how so.. I know its a little stifled on the side but this is only for the main page the other pages will be more overlayed.

the whale tales will be trimmed down forsure.. im just keeping it open till I find a logo and placement that works.

didnt really notice the fluidity of the gradient.. thanks!

this is variation #7 ahhahah its getting there though, my first ones were disgusting.

yeah ive really be struggling with the flow.. I like my art work and the watercolors but its been a struggle to design something fluid around that...

any suggestions to correct the eye flow?

    thats most awesome

im no web designer, but no splash page. it will be one more click to get to the good stuff.

also the comment about negative space. it would be nice to have the main layout be overpowered by the massive white, maybe side color, very light pastel tint to compliment your watercolor style.
