<body>no one critiques on this site anymore, i almost always have an opinion about how to make a piece better, even if its really minor, but I dont really feel like being the only one sticking their neck out.

do you kids even care about criticism or would you rather just hear nice things?

2nd part of that question would be if you guys are even into the tee section of the site anymore, my interest has feigned a lot since the site started but i still make it over there on occasion.

<body>i know this thread is going to blow up, but I'll contribute anyways:
I don't think anyone should call people dicks when they say something that they think could be changed to make a design better. Kyle always gets crap from random people calling him a dick, but he's really just helping the designer out in the long run. Without critiques, you'll never get better unless you are very good at watching and learning.

I check out the tees and talk section about the same amount. I always open up the top tees that grab my eye though.</body>

<body>I wish people would leave more thoughts on tees when they get posted. I just posted 2 over the weekend, and was really hoping for them to get some critiques or something.

Critiques from the amazing designers here really do go a long way, and have helped me to progress a lot...it's a shame that not much of that happens anymore.</body>

If I posted tees with any type of frequency I would say tear 'em up. I get really sick of people telling me how awesome I am in all facets of life all the time. Gets old.

Every artist needs criticism, either to grow from it or to learn to ignore it.

Anyway, if people do give criticism with a backhanded tone, it's the artists job to try to see the/any value in it, and you know, grow a fucking pair and not be such a whiny baby. </body>

<body>I try to be constructive but I am definitely guilty of just pointing out the good in things, more often than not. I would hope that people wouldn't hold back from constructively critiquing my work, as I feel like it's one of the best ways to learn, especially since there's such an abundance of talent on this site. The only thing I can't stand is the negative comments with no substance ie: "This sucks" "laaame" "stoopid" etc. If that's honestly how you feel, so much so that it prompts you to leave such a statement on ones work, at least elaborate and tell us why you feel that way. But yeah, I frequent the Talk section while I'm at work to kill the boredom but I try to make my way to the tees section every day. Overall, I agree with the statement that constructive criticism is an elusive beast these days... shame really :/

agreed. I hate it if I see a tee of mine just sitting there with no comments or criticisms and practically no votes when I know its not like a didnt spend time on it or anything, its not the best thing out there, but its not the worst.

I think when I first joined about a year ago, I would try to critique designs that I thought needed some help, and I feel like people did that to the first few tees I posted... but then that faded away.</body>

I hate incessant back-slapping. It's nice to get compliments if they're warranted, but I'd like it if someone pointed out a glaring error or something that could make it better.</body>

yeah, i think that's what kinda kills it for me, just too much to wade through. Before you could say something and watch the person improve upon it. Now if you said anything, by the time the person read the comment and did something about it, its already 5 pages deep and forgotten about.

well, to be honest, it is what it is. Theres no better way to express disinterest in a design than by not leaving a comment or love. If people arent getting the attention they want, they should force themselves to be more introspective and figure out why. </body>

Yeah, but it's still a tees section. And most people who make tees are... illustrators. Not mutually exclusive in the least. I don't think it's a bad thing</body>

To be honest I'd much rather get critiqued and shown what is not good about the design than getting praised by it. In a matter of fact I fully agreed with what you had to say about my last design ( derekdeal said: its like the face is the most interesting part and everything else is just kind of there. Its a nice piece i just think you could have fleshed it out more. ) and am focusing more on that.

I'd like to be more critical but sometimes people here take it to heart. I fully welcome all critics so feel free to expose my flaws and I hope that I can do the same for all of you in hopes to help improve the community and the art that we all love so much.</body>

<body>I agree with everyone about welcoming criticism. Rip my shit apart...only helps.

However, to the 'regulars' who say its not worth sifting through the tee section because there are so many artists you don't recognize is fucking annoying. Sure, there are people who just submit crap to see their stuff on a website, but there are a lot of people new to the design world as well who are sincerely trying to get involved and get opinions from the more established players.

My only suggestion for lightening the load in the tee section would be to restrict more than 1 or 2 submissions a day (yes I know its an unwritten rule here to keep the daily subs to a minimum, but it obviously isn't clear to everyone because there are still people posting 5+ shirts a day).</body>

<body>I only post criticism if I think I'm qualified, and if I think it'll make a difference.

Generally this place is an ego-minefield, usually the chances of pissing someone off outweigh the benefit of pointing out something they're probably not willing to go back and fix anyway.

Also, clients look here and I don't feel like it's appropriate to point out someones mistakes in front of possible buyers. I generally keep criticism private.</body>

I agree to a certain extent, if a client truly likes the artwork then they will also respect the fact that minor issues are being pointed out and possibly fixed. In turn making the overall design that much better plus if we can point things out don't you think the consumer might too. I think the criticism should be productive and not malicious or below the belt. </body>

this site is a pussy-fest!
feel free to rip me a new one whenever i'm posting dumb shit...that is, to critique and suggest improvements. at least two times when people pointed out flaws i re-did those aspects of the design and surely they got better.</body>

but i think when we all get one of those snarky motherfuckers commenting to start something, that just boils the blood yeah?

critiquing can be used to point out stupid moves, i'm still learning from it. but some people spread hate...

As far as critiquing goes, i think we'd see more critiques when the number of tees being submitted goes down, it'll be less intimidating.</body>

yeah, that plays into what you were saying earlier. There's just an overwhelming amount of subpar work to sift through. Maybe we should just make quakerninja the shirt reaper, since he basically loves every shirt, whichever he doesnt just goes 'poof' after a day.

<body>With people saying things about subpar work... no one can improve then. What needs to happen is those subpar things need to be put into the design in progress category and then just choose if you want to look at tees that are printed, tees up for voting, or works in progress. That would cut back on a lot of things, as long as people put their tee in the appropriate place etc.</body>

I don't think thats fair at all. Unless emptees is a website strictly for established, well known designers only...and if so, I was unaware.

I'll use myself as an example. I have a background in fine arts but I am quite new to design and art software. A lot of the work on this website actually INSPIRED me to try my hand at design/illustration, but its pretty discouraging to hear people bitching that every tee submitted isn't the work of a pro.

If I'm not a paid designer and/or confident enough in my work to sub it for voting I should just refrain from posting anything at all on emptees? I thought the beauty of emptees was the fact that its not a contest site, but a means to share your work and gather information from others.

I can see how people say there is subpar work posted...obviously there are people who post mocks they spend 5 minutes on just to see their shit on the website. But there are also a TON of people who aren't professionals who want to improve and get involved. I'm know I'm on a long rant now....this thread has just opened my eyes to how "cliquey" and obnoxious a lot of this community is.

I don't think thats fair at all. Unless emptees is a website strictly for established, well known designers only...and if so, I was unaware.

I'll use myself as an example. I have a background in fine arts but I am quite new to design and art software. A lot of the work on this website actually INSPIRED me to try my hand at design/illustration, but its pretty discouraging to hear people bitching that every tee submitted isn't the work of a pro.

no one was talking about you...you work hard for your stuff, and that is good!
Yes, it's cliquey and you'll see in about one year how tiring it is to make the angry mob larger, it takes a ton of time to get to know the new guys. And that's no reason for them to be rejected, just that some quality control would be nice now and then!</body>

Some people actually like the "threadless" style shirts, when people here start monitoring shirts on "only designs they like" get on the tee section then personally i think thats wrong. What you might like i might not etc.

Well I'm just saying Threadless is a big enough site/forum to browse many shirts of that particular style from various artists. There's a place of its own! Many have come here looking for votes.</body>

Although I also think the people who are "sub par", but are really trying and putting the time into their designs are really hoping on critiques and help. I mean we are a decently humble community and I thought that is one of the reasons why this site was created and also why so many on here have been successful, right? I could be totally off base here, which if so I apologize ahead of time.</body>

that is a good idea but then when someone new joins and is worth looking at you may not see them as you'll only tend to look at the people you follow, then it might become like deviantart where there's so much good talent getting missed because the popular people (that don't always deserve to be popular) get all the credit and followers</body>

Deviant art has around 10 million members and like thousands and thousands of submissions every day. Maybe you have a lazy internet ass but I'd still look at the tee section, it'd just make it possible for me to keep up with artists on here that I like, especially when I don't check it for a few days.

And as one of the popular kids, I want to tell you to not be mad about not being popular. </body>

That way you don't have to sift through a bunch of garbage, and if someone new posts and you want to keep an eye on them, it's way easier not to just forget about them. I always miss tees from people I like&lt;/blockquote&gt;

that is a good idea but then when someone new joins and is worth looking at you may not see them as you'll only tend to look at the people you follow, then it might become like deviantart where there's so much good talent getting missed because the popular people (that don't always deserve to be popular) get all the credit and followers&lt;/blockquote&gt;

I was going to say yeah it sounded like DeviantArt but that is a really good point. DeviantArt is massive.

But, if this place starts getting overrun by shitty anime designs I'm gone.</body>
