I have read a lot of graphic design blogs about how to be “professional” in our field but I have never been confronted with actually being in this situation. Whenever I do designs for organizations or bands they are usually friends and I don’t have to worry about contracts or anything of that nature.
I recently made a tee design for an artist who wasn’t asking for submissions. When I went to contact the artist I didn’t know what to do really. I emailed his label and messaged his myspace. (I think I ended up sounding more like a fanboy than anything else!) Those are the only way I could think to get in touch of the artist. :)
Since there are so many professionals in this community, how do you act “professional” and conduct business? Have you ever contacted a client without them asking you to design for them? How did it go?

Dave has a good article that covers a bit of this.
Sample letter of interest.
Dear so and so.
I am blah of blah co. and I saw your stuff...
I would like to know if you are available to work.
(a bit about the design.)
...general polite stuff, its almost like an interview in a lot of ways.
The artist should have his shit together and be able to answer any questions you have.
Be polite, have an idea of what you want to have done.
We (artist) really do want to help get the best product out.
As you can tell we are fan boys too.
did I get that right. or did you mean how to contact a client with a design, same thing, be polite ect.
