back in the day i put an ad in skratch magazine for like 20 bucks. i went to warped tour and they were handing out thousands of copies for free and my ad was in there. it didn’t do shit but it was kinda cool.
The rates are not as high as other magazines – but the circulation sucks balls. I can never find AP anywhere.
I would say that we end up losing about 10% of our money on the ads. That is, we put a coupon code in the magazine and the amount of sales that enter it fall short of what we paid for the ad. [That’s before the coupon amount is taken out too, so we lose even more.]
Over the past few years I’ve spend like $20,000 on AltPress ads, and they haven’t even sent me a motherfucking subscription. I got 1 issue, and I had to ask for it. Even the ads that I bought I didn’t get for free. I had to go to motherfucking Borders and buy them.
All in all, I am very dissatisfied with Alternative Press and their service.
Penthouse and Revolver put us in their magazines for free. Nothing. Just had us send them a few shirts – cost us like $30 for both.
Sorry for all the cursing. Rob just reminded me of how annoyed I am about it still.
i did an indieclick campaign a few years ago, cost me a bunch of money but i think it worked out pretty well, did some huge numbers right out of the gate.

if it makes you feel anybetter i found out about you from AP. it was some silverstein/hawthorne heights add, and they all had the bleeding heart shirt on. and i really like the name so it stuck with me haha
in the middle of a small ad campaign with indie click right now on smartpunk, punknews, emotionalpunk, and aversion. not sure if i’m going after the wrong market (i still have yet to find some bands to feature and sponsor and have my site reflect it), but i’m not getting much of a response yet. I didn’t invest that much, so that could be the reason why…
with indieclick, what worked really well for me was getting a holiday package deal across a number of channels – they’ll probably be offering them soonish, but you get a way lower CPM.

rob, what “channel” did you advertise to?
they have the indie community channel, the music blog channel, community and culture sites, etc..
do you get to choose? i’m assuming.
From our experience, paying $6000 for a full page ad in AP is worthless really. Unless you’ve got a ton of cash to blow. The trick is to get featured in the magazine in an editorial or review. Fuck paying for the ads!
what are ur thoughts on doing just a pure attention grabber ad? I was dead seriously thinknig of just doing a big pink block with the “OH’ FUCK!” then putting the web address in small at the bottom.
I think that would be more likely to draw some interest over the plain old hot girl and grungy text ad.

alternative press costs boatloads now, i don’t see the justification in doing so. jimmy + mark, do you guys get results out of that?

Well, at least that is something!

I second the indieclick suggestion; my best ad campaign ever was through them and I’m half tempted to do one this holiday season too.
