anyway, I dig that design dude, it’s cool..

i used to show very rough initial sketches and get aproovals on them, then go ahead and finish it.

I would like to show progress as I go along but I am afraid of a small amount of people not having a good imagination and being able to see where its going or be able to foresee the finished piece. And then you spend time answering questions and changing things- mainly because they dont know how the end piece will look.

I sent one client a sketch, said it was a sketch, yet they replied with 'um, we like it but it doesnt look like your other pieces, do you think you can make it more cleaner and put more detail in it for us please?'.

I would aim to get that 'wow' factor- its risky if there are changes though.

lately though I am starting to put more detail into my sketches. It makes the world of difference for clients and yourself alike, for one, it makes finishing it much quicker.

did i answer a question or did i just spout crap then? hahaha.

anyhoo- looks awesome derek. maybe more red/lava flying about under the cloud? maybe? am usually wrong on these things anyway ahaha.

I like working with designers who offer sketches during the progress. As godmachine said, the designer / client can work with it during the whole setup, that way you're not just shown a piece of work and say 'hope this is what you were going for'.

Some clients may see it differently, and if it does look awesome, may just accept based on that 'wow' factor. But some instances, it's just not what they had in mind. Communication is key.

i meant that I really try to avoid having the client work with me 'during' the design- it slows stuff right down waiting for emails back and forth, understanding each others ideas etc etc. I am not paid enough to do that- if i was go-media, fair enough. But I am not.

If you want to though- I am happy to- just need more time and money.

I get a good brief, good sketch- and we go from there to the finished piece.

I'm not saying constant back and forth, but I like a rough first draft, myself. That way I know what's in their heads from the get go. Nothing worse than a designer getting the complete wrong concept and you telling them to scrap it and start over.

I've never had it happen, but I would feel awful saying that, myself. Obviously I'd compensate for that fact, but still.

I hate when someone cant even give you the decency of a response after you’ve invested time into their project. oh well, im trying to illustrate more and this gave me good practice.

I hate when people ask you to design them something for a price, and then they say they like it and when it comes time to pay, they never fucking respond... or if they just dont respond at all. I think its really fucked up that they can just waste someones time like that and not even care to respond. "I wouldnt mind if they said, I'm sorry, im not really interested anymore," rather than give me the cold shoulder.

i GUARANTEE i have you beat there. MY sketches are the worst ever. a scribbly mess with a few words somewhere on it.

i challenge you to a private messy sketch off! I have seen mumfords and we are pretty similar- maybe we can have you beat hahaha

possible that this client was me?
i guess every artist has an another way to define "sketch".
i worked with you together and i was completely shocked.
we talked about if you could do a "hip hop dinosaur".
and then you were sending me a "sketch" and it looks like this

and i was like "whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat?"
but just because a few artists ago send me sketches which were "the final version not inked".
and after 2-3 weeks you send me the final version and it is/was amazing

but i'm soooo happy with it.

i think every artist chooses a different way to work with clients.
some keep their clients up do date and show them every new splash of color. and some send them a "sketch" and then the final verison.

however...
godmachine, you're an amazing artist

I generally do a sketch then a final. But sometimes if the idea is agreed on I have gone right to the final. Only reason I sometimes go with sketch first is sometimes some clients will have a completely different idea, then that design is scratched wither it's finished design or not so better it's a sketch then a fully colored illo.

I ALWAYS show a thumbnail, and if not a color comp, atleast a very close rough sketch of Value...

Like this..

color comp...

and the pencils.. so far..

sorry for the crap photo, these pages are for a children's book I am working on right now, and they are about 24" long, didnt' feel like scanning it yet..

but you get the point, if the client is spending big money, I want them to see EXACTLY where it's going to, so there is no surprises when the final art is delivered. y'knaw i mean?
