<strong><a href="http://kingstrike.com"/>Kingstrike</a> launched today.</strong> Kingstrike seems a godsend for clients and designers alike.

<strong>They list art for sale.</strong> There are plenty of sites which do that, but the site is structured in a unique way.

<strong>Clients see prices.</strong> Transparency allows for ease of buying the art.

<strong>Purchased shirts are immediately downloadable by clients.</strong> The designer uploads the high res file when submitting the design. This allows a client to be confident that a purchase made is an easily, instantly printable piece of art.

I really think such a site could be grand for the community. I've been toying with designing more in advance of being requested for art; Kingstrike looks like a great way to test those waters.

Yeah; I upped the wolfman to start. I have a heap of designs that can go up there, though.

mathcasey, there will always be a place for that. That desire doesn't negate the benefits of the site, though. Two different animals.

I think MAYBE getting that price is good or at least called for if it was for a specific client. Meaning they came to you for the idea and came to you for that specific purpose. Making random stuff and throwing it on a site expecting to get a same price seems kind of IFFIE to me. Some of these appear to be rejects or unapproved artwork. To me paying that high is a joke. I think for that price, you should put your heart, thought and imagination into a specific client. Not just making artwork, for whatever reason and hoping to get that price. I dont think throwing any piece of art on a shirt, makes it a tshirt. Tee design is an art. You have something laying around, you should be happy to get something rather than nothing. The price they are asking I feel is for a CUSTOM PIECE. It will also be disheartening to those who go on that site to kind of get a quote from you without particularly asking, seeing the price and their bubble is quickly busted. People will start basing their prices on what "so and so charges" It's a bad move in my opinion.

$400 isn't some godly sum. It's pretty barrier of entry. Most companies and designers do not work with a glorified spec-work-slum-band-shirt mentality.

Nice dig on my painterly piece. Because all shirts need look the same to be valid.

i do have a question about rights with this though...

so some of these designs are more threadless style designs where the illustration may be simple but its really the idea that is awesome (ex. Bloods vs Crypts). lets say:

-some company copies the idea/design and produces it. (snorg)

-then someone buys the design off this site. only to find out later its been copied.

-the copycat would have technically had the design first so the person would be SOL.

that may seem like a far fetched scenario but i can see a lot of people coming to a site like this just to copy ideas that aren't produced yet. do you anticipate this being an issue at all?

so some of these designs are more threadless style designs where the illustration may be simple but its really the idea that is awesome (ex. Bloods vs Crypts). lets say:

-some company copies the idea/design and produces it. (snorg)

-then someone buys the design off this site. only to find out later its been copied.

-the copycat would have technically had the design first so the person would be SOL.

that may seem like a far fetched scenario but i can see a lot of people coming to a site like this just to copy ideas that aren't produced yet. do you anticipate this being an issue at all?</blockquote>

I don't think so; production is a second step. The tee having been shown first at a site like this indicates who was first. Ya think?

In thinking it over, the litigation would definitely be on the side of the company which purchased the design.

They'd indicate date of purchase with their receipt, show when the design was available on a site like this, and they would be in the right.

Unfortunately, rippers seldom care either way. I tend not to limit myself based on potential misappropriations (whether that's in posting detailed shots, watermarkless mockups, etc).

I really like that site, such a great idea. I'm sure like most every newly launched site there will be some things to iron out, but overall I think this is a great model. I know if I were starting my own line (or an existing large brand looking to add to my line) I would most definitely be looking at this site.

Totallly agree with you Steven. I think some folks are only probably used to what bands/labels are paying, which in my experience is in the $125-250 range, some up to $325. But I've dealt with smaller clothing lines who've paid in the $400-500 range. It really depends on what you think you're worth and how you market yourself.

I kind of see where everyone is coming from. I think everyone has a point.

I agree with what Kyle says though. Those kind of prices for custom client pieces are absolutely right, but that's not what these are.

I still think it's a really superb business model and could be really successful if it kicks off, but i don't know if they could do that without adjusting how it works slightly.

I can't see loads of people seeing $400 and going "yeah, that's reasonable". The people wanting to pay that amount will contact the artists and get custom work because they understand the industry more than the people who want any old good design and don't care whether it was created for them or not.

<blockquote><cite>Kyle Crawford said:</cite> I think MAYBE getting that price is good or at least called for if it was for a specific client. People will start basing their prices on what "so and so charges" It's a bad move in my opinion.</blockquote>

$400 bucks is pretty fair a custom piece, i gotta agree with Kyle that i won't pay for the work shown there, unless it really blows me away. The impression i get is this pieces are rejected designs.

Crikey, people here seem a bit negative to me sometimes. I don't know what harm it can do. If you're a designer and get the chance, why not throw a design on there and see what happens? If you're a brand/label and think it's a wack idea just steer clear. Seems to me that another outlet for designers can only be a good thing. And who knows, a design that you deem unworthy of $400 could be just what someone is looking for for that money. Everybody prices there work differently but just because someone is happy to charge $100 shouldn't stop us all thinking big should it? Design like art is worth what people are willing to pay for it - sometimes that is $400, sometimes it ain't.

The idea that the designs are "rejected" is a unique construct of the wide popularity of e-competitions. When a design doesn't print at a contest, I wouldn't call it a reject, mainly because it may have been heavily embraced and scored extremely well. These sites can't print everything. In fact, all my designs that have scored higher than 3 have not printed at Threadless.

The weirdest thing is that, as a freelance apparel designer, most of my custom commissions that are guided and shaped by companies, that never go up for some vote, would score terribly at Threadless or DBH, but do very well for their respective companies (I hope, or I don't know why I get repeat buisness).

So thinking about something as a reject, at least in a negative connotation, because it didn't win an online competition is kinda weak.

Go Kingstrike, GO!</blockquote>

+100.

All art aside $400 is definitely not an outrageous price to sell a design at. You can argue that the current designs on Kingstrike aren't worth that, but it's all subjective. If you design shirts for a living you probably wouldn't be selling them at $200/ea. You would have to do over 100 designs/yr just to pull in a below average income.

<blockquote><cite>ste7en said:</cite> The idea that the designs are "rejected" is a unique construct of the wide popularity of e-competitions.

So thinking about something as a reject, at least in a negative connotation, because it didn't win an online competition is kinda weak.</blockquote>

I was thinking of more to rejected and unapproved artwork for a band/apparel company/label. I don't think a label will want to buy a design for $400 that was pitched to a band for less than that and end up getting rejected.

I am up for paying designers for what they are worth and having as many outlet as possible to get their designs out that but at the end of the day, companies and label who can pay the prices of $400 and above will probably not buy a design straight off from the site. They will rather go to the artist straight for the particular kind of look that they are seeking.

The band tee attitude of rejected work is a microcosm. Most design work doesn't work this way. You make a piece till it is right via an open dialog with rounds of changes.

I really hate the band shirt design model and mentality. It's a spec work fest.

That was an example my friend and unfortunately not everyone works the same way as you.

Honestly, spec work is kinda advantageous for companies and the like seeking design work, but i really feel for the artists and designers that work hard to come out with a design. I personally won't call for spec work, as i won't want to be a recipient of that too.

Hear hear. I've only done a couple of shirts 'the band way'. They really are spare time things and certainly not a route I'd like to pursue full time - hell, tshirts in general aren't something I'd want to pursue full time. This industry should be about so much more than that.

I didn't like the Lauren Albert one at first, but after having a look at the site, I would pay every penny for that design. I guess a little teamwork never hurts. I don't have anything against lowballers per say, everyone starts somewhere, but it's a good idea to have a competitive rate for the sake of the other designers out there, clients need to understand art cost money. It's a matter of respect. We need each other after all.

Great piece by the way Julia

From a buyers point of view the fee for the art not only includes the art itself but the fact that it's available immediately which some companies might find beneficial.

Some comanies might like the fact they don't have to use their own imagination ha ha.

But from the artists point of view would you like a little control over who buys your designs or do you really don't mind ? And that is meant as a genuine question :)

Totally.

Don't get me wrong, I'll work for less if I feel there's something else to be gained from it - most of us would - but the attitude to pricing here is crazy. I've got a mortgage, 2 kids and a wife, and you can bet your ass that after doing this for 12 years, I'm going to put a value on it.

I don't think people should value other's stuff either, but something is only worth what someone will pay for it anyways.

Obviously that means that the range of an item's value can be massive, purely because if one person wants to pay $1000 for something then it's worth that, even if the next highest amount someone is willing to pay is only 50% of that.

I'm looking forward to seeing this site evolve though, i think it could be huge.

Supermalyna, I haven't had time to send out promotional mailers yet, so far everything is word of mouth. I just needed to get the site up before SXSW interactive. I could definitely use everyone's help spreading the word.

As for the promo stuff, I'm either going to go with shirts or a card deck. I'll let you guys know which I decide on, so you can grab some at cost if you want.

So are you eventually going to open the floodgates and let more artists in or is it going to stay exclusive to artists you guys review and decide to accept?

I'm just trying to figure out how this thing is going to work.

Once a design is printed the page will link to the place you can purchase them. This is entirely up to the customer though.

They also have the choice to leave the design on Kingstrike or take it down after purchase. The High 4 design was left up and just marked as sold. The HRH design was taken down, but will pop back up once it's been printed.

As I said earlier, we're trying to keep the styles and subject matter as wide as possible. Most of you have some great work, but we don't want to flood the site with tons of skull, vomit, zombie etc. designs. I'm not saying they're bad, but you should see amount of artists that emailed us specializing in that style.

I hope you guys aren't offended, but I understand that the way we work won't please everyone.

ok so then do you judge the designs that go up per design submitted or once you are officially a part of the site can you submit any art you have, as long as it is a print ready format.

On a related note, when an artist wants to be part of the site do you judge is entire portfolio to see the value of their entire body of work, or do you just evaluate the art they want submitted to your site.

I am only grillin you because I think its a great idea.

Supermalyna, I haven't had time to send out promotional mailers yet, so far everything is word of mouth. I just needed to get the site up before SXSW interactive. I could definitely use everyone's help spreading the word.

As for the promo stuff, I'm either going to go with shirts or a card deck. I'll let you guys know which I decide on, so you can grab some at cost if you want.</blockquote>

brilliant idea. it's good to see an artist marketplace specifically aimed at apparel companies looking for new designs. I wish it was more open-ended though. I know it's up to the folks at kingstrike to determine what content goes up on their site but one man's garbage is another man's treasure.

I only read the first 50 comments or so, but seriously $400 is not alot to pay for a design.

I sold Defunker 2 'rejected' threadless designs 5 years ago for $1000. That's $500 a pop.

Anyone with the mentality that no one is going to pay that much for a piece of art really need to change your thier point of view, or get out of the game.
