Anyone here speak Japanese?

posted 7 months ago by PrimatePrecious

Hey everyone, I was wondering if there was anyone around that could help me with some Japanese for a design I’m working on.

I need the Japanese equivalent of the phrase "yuck!" or "eew!".
From what I’ve checked on Google "Yuck/Gross" is "Interj". Is this correct? Do you have any better suggestions? I’ve also come across the term "Chikusho" that means "Damn" or "Damn it" and wonder if this is correct also.

The context for saying these phrases would be if you were to step in something gross on the sidewalk, like gum or dog shit.

I’d love to have help clearing this up and I’d really love if anyone knew how to write these in the proper Japanese characters and not the western alphabet.

If no one really knows, thanks anyway, ain’t no thang.

R.

My understanding (which isn’t great) That there is one alphabet for spelling basic words and another for spelling out foreign words. On top of that they use chinese characters in place of a lot of words.

    katakana, hiragana, and kanji respectively.

some girls use the onomatopeiac word "iiiiyyyaaaaa" which would translate as "ewwwwww". i could be wrong. Shimatta is a good word for it i suppose. I suck at nihonggo now.

It’s correct that "Chikusho" means "damn"
I lived in Japan for a while and I always thought my new friends "damn" in Swedish, eventually I got the Japanese equivalent from one of them :P

chadmanzo is correct. Girls usually say iya da [いやだ!] which doesn’t really mean yuck or eww but can be used in those situations and any situations where you are not happy about something: being asked to do overtime, stepping in dog shit, being accosted by a scout looking for hostesses near Hachiko...you get the picture.
For dudes you could say chikusho which was also mentioned but anytime I have used it I was met with plenty of laughter and I am still not sure if it’s because I am foreign or because the word is a bit old-fashioned but they told me I had used it in the right context.
Anyway, I think it would depend on the situation but guys could say something like: hidoi, mazui or baka.

I also have respect for those who speak Japanese as a second language (amazing determination). When I visited Japan, I never wanted to leave. I am trying to teach myself, but it’s a long, hard process. Hope you find the translation you need!
