Custom coats [pics from the second batch!]

posted 9 months ago by Linty Fresh

Ok, I spent the day working on a completely new order form, which is now downloadable and includes a ton of pictures showing all the fabrics and colors available. Hopefully it’ll be a LOT easier to use than before. I’ve also added a few new styles to the catalog, so check them out.

Download the order form here:

Out of interest Eric, was this middle-man/exporter role something you envisaged when you first went out to China, or was it something you decided to do after you started seeing all the possibilities of getting your own custom stuff made?

Honestly, it’s something I wanted to avoid doing since I figured it’d be a headache, but after getting everything in place mentally, I think I know how to expedite the process. It’s all trial and error though. If it’s too hassle, I’ll stop!

But the reason I came wasn’t for business. I wanted to do something drastic with my life and really have an experience I’d never forget. It’s already been that and more.

Another thing to keep in mind is that the style becomes a lot more casual if you just shorten the jacket. And the length and measurement is all completely up to you guys. When you know what style/color/pattern you want, I’ll send you a PDF will all the measurements I need and you can adjust this accordingly. My point being, there’s a lot of flexibility in the style.

Oops, should’ve been more clear: once you know the style you want, email me and I’ll send you a PDF with the measurements I need. It has garment pics and shows how to measure. So it’s COMPLETELY custom-tailored. Nothing is stock. Each is made by hand from scratch.

Yep, I can add a hood if that’s what you want, but it will be an extra charge of $2-3.

sittingduck said: so wait, we can do one off orders on these? totally getting one next week, just moved to bellingham and it’s FREEZING up here! h looks pretty awesome too.

Yes, these prices are for one offs. Since this isn’t some huge factory, they can do them no problem, but there aren’t huge price breaks for getting more than one done.

Yes, it’s according to the pics here. If you have a special request I can poke around the stock room to see if it’s available, but if it’s a special patterned fabric you want, they probably don’t have it. That’s why I’m encouraging folks to stick with tweed or wool like the pics, and then go for a colored lining. I really recommend going for a quilted lining (not pictured, sorry!). It’s much warmer as a jacket insert.

Yup, easy. All customizations are available. The only limitation is what fabric is in the shop. But if you see it in the pictures above, it can be done. Heck, you can design your own jacket if you want.

Can you choose stuff like inside pockets, number of pockets on outside etc etc? I know it’ll add a few dollars a time, i’m just wondering.

What payment methods do you accept, and do you ship to belgium?

  63. Linty Fresh - Eric Terry avatar

Linty Fresh said 9 months ago

Ok, let me be more specific: there are only 2 limitations with these jackets:

    1. Available fabric and hardware
    2. Your imagination

People have been emailing me about hoodies and sweaters and while I’m curious about that too, this place doesn’t carry those kinds of fabrics. They specialize in coats, wool and tweed. In the future, if I find another place, or they start carrying cottons and fleece, we can do hoodies, but for now, I’m just offering coats.

Fabric limitations also mean she’s not going to have special patterns that you may want to include. She’s got some flanel, but not every type you see online.

As for pockets, buttons, zippers, etc, it’s all possible to do. But I need a picture to work form. If you find a jacket online that is wool, send me the picture and we’ll go from there.

Again, though please take a look at the order form I’ve set up. It answers most of your questions here. I’ve edited it, too, so it’s all on one page and you can see all the items at once.

    Let’s make some coats people!

This is all in the order form, but yes, measure yourself, not another coat. You can also specify if you want a snug fit or a loose fit, but otherwise she’ll just go with the style of the pic you choose.

We’ll see. It’s been taking a lot of time on my end to sort stuff out and make trips down there. It’s all about whether it’s worth the time/effort. So I’m not really sure yet.

    Awesome stuff man.

I think the reason its taking time to get rolling is because as much as you’ve already tried to explain - this is still rather vague. Even so its well worth the go on my end to at least get a quote on what it’d cost and put an order through than from there determine if its worth it. Expect me to be making an order in the near future for sure.

If possible and if clients accept show us some examples of some jackets being produced.

The cost alone is staggering. The last jacket I purchased was $280.

I hope enough people order to make it worth your penny, definitely worth giving some more time!

I especially like the collar and button flap.

Yeah, I apologize for the vagueness, I’ve been working with a lot of people and a better system is working itself out in my mind, I just need to figure out how to implement it. Ideally I’d have a website where people could select all the features in one place, but I don’t know if I want to commit that much to this, since I’m just starting.

Roccanti said: Wow this is amazing. I really want to do this as well. Ive been trying to find me the perfect coat and haven’t been able too. The only real question I had which I didn’t see was how long does it take? Maybe I overlooked it.

Give it a month from the order date to you receiving it, although it’ll probably be quicker.

haha, the other day i was thinking it would be cool to make something like what your saying. but you can keep the idea bc i would def leave cookies or something in all the pockets and have a coat full of crumbs

  107. quakerninja - Newman avatar

    quakerninja said 9 months ago

There are a lot of dollars that go into designing things, I’m sure there are some good reasons for why pocket coats are not on the shelves. I think it would be uncomfortable to have all pockets as I put a great deal of pokey things in my pockets keys and pens and what not.
I don’t want to sit on those or place them in hard to reach places. I do have a coat that has 4 pockets on the front, one big set for stuff, and one set smaller set with warm innards for my hands, that I enjoy. I’ll put some thought into it.

Each style comes as a base cost, depending on the complexity and labor involved of that particular style. Those costs are noted when you select the style. Other options, like adding a hood or a high-quality lining, incur other costs. Once the forms are turned back in to me I respond with a final cost, including shipping, and when I receive payment I submit the form for production.

This is all explained on the last page.

They’ve got this same herringbone in a black/white combo, which looks like a light grey, but if you want a solid color, you’d have to use wool.
